If you're just starting out with compression, something like an Alesis 3630 is good to learn on.
It has all the necessary gating and compression controls including time stamping around the knobs which will help familiarize you with compressor and gate reaction times.
You can pick these up on ebay pretty cheap and for the money this is a nice sounding compressor which should last you well (until you've worked out what compressor you'll need to get "your sound"!!!)

I was browsing the 60 manual tonight (yes, I still reference the manual)

and I noticed the specs on the outputs.

Check it

Record input sensitivity: (HI Gain) -65 dBm, 45k Ohm (MID Gain) -45 dBm, 45k Ohm, (LO Gain) -27 dBm, 45k Ohm

Stereo Output Level : -3dBv, 600 Ohm
Level of 8 individual outputs: 0dBv, 600 Ohm

So the indi's are louder than the stereo output level. A +4 dB boost would put you over unity, and not a good idea, since you don't really want to record over 0 dB if you are going digital (CD's) and it isn't a good idea anyway unless you want to overdrive something.

I think the design is well suited for studio use. You can always boost the outputs in your mixer, so this mod sounds like hype. Does anyone have the real skinny on what this is supposed to do?

I am steady using the 8 outs, but my stereo outs are always plenty loud when I am assigning the indi outs on a new program.

I think we forget that the 60 more than the 2000/xl was designed with pro studio's in mind, where the 2000/xl was designed for a cheaper market (bedroom producers, DJ's, people who couldn't afford a 3000) and cut costs in building materials like they did with the 60II. So a lot of thought went into how things like levels were set.
