Organizing all your samples?

Im curious to how other people organize all their samples, Im just saving alot of sample cds on my shit, Ill prob just organize them into instruments, but my mpc doesn't have audition from the HD, so I'm going to have to go more indepth

How do you keep your sounds organized for quick access?

I keep all mine on Zip.... make folders saying which CD or Record I sampled from, then put the sample in that folder, then when Ineed 2 get em, then I can.... If it's an instrument, and not a voice, I put what kind of instrument it is, like, "Strings" and toss it in that folder

I have a 2gig hard drive, and what I like to do, is go through all my sample cd's, and file all the good stuff into folders in the hard drive.

I have folders for live drums, dirty drums, synth drums, closed highhats, vox, and on and on.

The cool thing is, hard drive loads are much faster than cd.

I just leave them in the folder I got them from. If I sample a record I put it in a folder with the date and make a "sample origin.txt" file and put all the records info in there. Then once I decide on all my drum sounds and chops and what not I take that off my zip and put that in the folder. It's basically a backup incase my zip fails (which it has before and eaten my beats). My friend gave me a huge sample CD so I just leave those samples in the folder's they're in in my SCSI CD-ROM.

i do one disk per kit-then just add samples to the pgm. SO bassically, if ive got a drum kit that has a "dirtier" sound to it, i keep those drums on the disk and just add new samples to it if i make a new beat. So ive got several disks with differant types of drums-and the corresponding samples to those arrangements.

I do this because i frequently reuse the same drums in alot of my tracks.

just make folders, i have zips where i keep my completed beats, i just make a folder, name it the name of the beat and save the mid. file with the prgm. file in it with all the sounds i used. then i got zips with just b/s like chopped instruments and samples that i havent used yet but will eventually, everything is in a folder. when i first started using the mp i would make beats and then not remember my kits, i lost a lot of hot ish that way so i decided to get more organized.

i save all my finished beats on my harddrive...

example ... folder "reign" would contain the .aps, .all and all the samples used to formulate the beat.... that way if i want to go back and tweak the beat.... all i got to do is highlight the files... drag them onto my zip... and load it up in my mpc200xl... easy shizzle....

as far as keeping track of orgin of the sample... i create a .txt file..... example reign.txt which would read something like....

vinyl
R.
"half on a baby" - rkelly : 1/4

^thats it.... first line is the source format...which is vinyl
second... name of album....
then the name of the song...artist.... then the side and track...of the record...... in this case side 1 track 4

.
.
basically each beat has a .txt file.... with this info.....

i keep all on ZIP discs

I'm new to the MPC but I plan on storing programs on the CF card and hard drive and as I go when memory becomes a problem. And as the library of samples gets larger, I plan to organize them and burn them onto a CD's That way if I want them there easy to access and CD-r 's are cheap as hell. Is this a good way to work or am I missing something ?

man, my hard drive is bombarded with samples, mainly shit i sampled myself...what i do is number each one while im working with...say i sampled "rene and angela-ill be good"...when i cut the loop out, before chopping it down, i will label it something like "1 be good 1"....then if i **** with that loop more, maybe add some fx on the loop itself, ill save it as "1 be good 2" and so on...its a good reference when im going back looking for shit i chopped up for a certain beat...then when im done writing the beat or i just dont want to **** with it for awhile, i burn all the samples for as many beats that will fit, onto a cd and label it

That's kind of what I been doing b/c I use all sample from vinyl. So that works well for you labeling the original source file 1 and then everytime you manipulate it save it a a differant number same name?

yeah, it works real well...even tho i have one HUGE ass folder full of numbered samples now, its still real easy to find what im looking for, especially since they are all alphabetically listed

it seems like some of you cats put the same record you sampled from right back in the pile of UN-sampled records....

for me... the records i sampled from are in a seperate section... and are labeled accordingly...

i would get a piece of tape... tear out a small piece of paper... and stick it on some part of the vinyl jacket... and based on the previous post i made in this thread... i would write:

"reign"
1/4

^reign would be the name i gave the beat i created ...and once again the 1/4 lets me know which side and track the sample came from...

thats cool idea genetic. Not only are my beats unorganized, so are my stacks of wax.
