Help!!!Getting my beats tight!!!

Anyone help me out? Ive chopped kicks & snares onto pads on the 2000xl & i have my quantise set at 1/16th to drum out a beat. When i listen back after recording, the kick & snare aren't where i drummed them exactly? Should i turn the quantise off or lower it to say 1/8th or is it just practise? The quantise seems to work against what im trying to lay down & i can't quite get my beats exactly how i drummed them in. Could the quantise function be broken? Any thoughts

I doubt that your quantize function is broken.
Maybe you tried to put your drums into space that belongs to 16 triplets quantizing or 32 triplets? Maybe you tried to program the beat with the swing feeling that is for example 16 triplets...
Try different settings for quantization.If you leave the TC (timing correction) on 16,your beat will sound a bit robotic or sth like that.

Thats what quantise is. It moves what u played to the exact note, this may be a good or bad thing, depending on the sound u want. The best way is to just turn off quantize.

Yea turn it off and try it and see how it comes out.

TC on the MPC is a bit unforgiving i tried it every which way but loose
and i still couldnt get it to groove with me ...
so i learned to run with TC off .. that takes a bit of practice but once you git it down you'll absouletly love it

Cheers everyone tried it last night with the TC OFF & it works a right treat! Doesn't seem too difficult to get in time really-think the years of skratch practise on turntables must have developed my timing! Thanks again yall' & ......................................Peaceeeee......

I've been trying the same thing. I'm just trying to get a little 2 bar loop going but I am having a tough time getting the end of the loop to sync up with the beginning of the loop.

TC is your friend. I love hearing ppl talk about "ohh yeah i leave it off uhh!" Im 50/50 with the TC. sometimes i do sometimes i dont. Different parts of your drums as a whole can be quantized at different settings. i wouldnt base your beat making off using it or not using it.

That thread about ppl that religiously use time correction off and are all proud of it ... usually the worst beats ... by far. I dont know man, its what ever works for you.

dont limit your self to this but its a good place to start.

hi hat 1/8 or off
snare 1/8 or 1/16
kick - 1/8 1/16 or 1/16(3) (you can also record a track where a few kicks hit at 1/8 and then another kick track where its TC'd at 1/16 or 1/16(3)

Just make em knock .. end of the story

^^^said it all right there! remember your also making joints so the djs can spin it. when you turn off the tc and have them off beat joints going, sometimes it's hell tring to bring it into the mix.

Do you record them separately? (snare on one track, kick on another)

For the past few days, I have been trying to tap out a simple little track (kick kick snare kick... kick snare kick kick snare kick... kick snare rpt) but I am unable to make the loop concise.

I guess its whatever works for you, my method isn't really working because it takes about 100 + tries to get the timing exactly right and thats just me getting lucky with the tapping... but I am still learning how to use quantization.

Most of the time I record seperatly,but sometimes if I'm making a drum pattern and it's not comming together like I want I record them all in one track.Then copy the track and erase them one by one so eventually tr1-kick,tr2-snare,ect.
