MPC1000 & Korg Triton Classic MIDI interaction questions

I need some help in getting my keyboard and MPC to play nice together. I am interested in syncing the two together, whereby all samples will loaded into and manipulated by the MPC [for example, drums and bass samples to establish the rhythm] using its sequencer, and I'll be using the Triton to layout the melody with its own onboard sounds and sequencer, in time with the MPC. I have a few questions about this. Assuming I lay the MPC parts out first with its sequencer, then I compose the melody on the Triton. Is it even possible to use two distinct sequencers in this manner? I expect it is a simple matter of slaving the Triton to the MPC, and having the audio output of both machines going to my mixer, correct? That way I'll hear the MPC's output while I come up with the Triton's melody part. Then, when the melody is established and it comes time to save everything, I'll save the MPC files on the MPC as a program, including all samples and song data, and subsequently save the Triton files as a SEQUENCE on the Triton's floppy disks. Then, each time I want to play back the song, I'll need to fire up both machines, MIDI them up and everything should play back correctly. For me, it gets confusing when I need to assign channels and tracks to the different parts on the two machines. Should I avoid using the same track numbers on each respective machine? For instance, if the sampled music composed on the MPC take up tracks 1-8, should I start on track 9 on the Triton when laying down the melody? I hope I'm being clear in what I'm hoping to achieve. Any feedback will be appreciated.

You can do what you're asking, but it might be simpler to sequence the triton from the MPC, rather than run the two sequencers in parallel. If you do that, then there's one sequence file to save, and all of your tracks are organized in a coherent way on the MPC.

thanks for the feedback. So if I sequence the Triton from the MPC, the MPC will trigger the Triton's onboard sounds, just as if they were samples coming out of the MPC? So in essence the MPC will be controlling both machines. It will control its own samples directly, and manipulate the Triton via MIDI. So then, when I'm actually playing out the melody on the Triton, the performance data will be saved over to the MPC?

Sorry for the basic questions...MIDI is always a stumbling block with me.

MAKE Sure! your set up on the keyboard is like this.

MPC1000 and Triton Extreme Midi Setup
first if you have your Audio cables hooked up to your Mixer,it's ok. The Problem is midi. Here's how I have my setup,try this.

Let's set your triton up first.

1. In the Triton-hit Global button- should look like this.

Bank Map-----------Korg

Power on Mode-----Memorize

System Clock-------Internal

Note* while still in Global-hit Menu,then hit Midi-you should be in Midi setup.

2. Midi-Channel--------------1 checkbox Local on

Convert Position----PreMidi note on -----All

Midi Clock Internal External Midi
External USB

use only when slaving etc ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

MIDI Filter. check all,So you don't have to go back in, Program change,Bank change etc.

Now Hit Sequence button on The Triton Extreme. Your in Sequence Mode
so the MPC can use the Program sounds from the triton (16 Channels to use).

MPC Setup;

1.hit mode key/midi-sync. receive channel -All
soft thru:as track
up to you on this / sequence change by program change:Off
Pad to internal sound:On

Sync in : Off
Sync Out: AB

Now go to main Page (MPC).
In Track 1

Go to Type: MIDI Pgm:No-1 -------------------Midi: 1 -16 /A-B

Now to play the sounds or record to the MPC sequence you can setup your

Banks and Programs changes Here.

In Pgm: No-1 hit window key: A window popsup and says Program Change.

Bank Select:NO-turn it to Yes MSB:0 LSB:0 < here's where you change in and out of your programs. If you have a Korg Manual (Triton Parameter Guide) on page 158. look at O-2a: System Preference- Bank Map.

Bank-A MSB:00 LSB:0-----------Program Change 1-127< Sounds are here.

Bank-B MSB:00 LSB:1-----------Program Change 1-127

Remember once you have this set;up , you can change your sounds from your MPC by turning Program numbers. Also make sure in Program change window you turn transmit program changes in this track to: Yes

PS. If you leave Memorize on in the Korg,before you turn off,when your done and turn off, you can turn the Korg back on and it remembers the last setup. Like working in Seq/Mode. All I do now is turn on the equipment
and program in my MPC,not having to mess with the triton extreme buttons.

cosign- there's know need to use two sequences,jus use the MPC1k . trigger the S5K from the MPC usesing a Midi keyboard or sort.
