I own an MPC 1000 with a broken CF drive. I installed a hard drive but due to my unit having OS 1.2, it only recognizes about 2 gigs of the drive. I understand that it will recognize my HD in it's entirety once the new OS is installed, but I'm not sure if it's possible to install the new OS without a working CF drive. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!!!!!!

I have the same exact problem. I just called akai and they said that you can't upgrade without a CF drive. I do have a roomate who has an mpc 1k with a working CF drive so I'm wondering if it's possible to swap out CF drives just so that I can upgrade my OS. If anybody knows how to do this, please help!

Ok, I took this thing apart and was able to successfully remove the internal CF reader. I called akai and they are currently out of stock on that part but once they get it, it will cost $59 plus shipping. I'm just gonna wait till my roomate gets home so I can just take out his and use it to update the OS on mine.

Yea, a friend of mine has had the part to fix his CF drive on back order for over a year. He also is stuck with the old OS. It seems we're all S-O-L. Except for the guy who's roomie has another 1000. lucky duck!

go to guitar center, use your credit card and buy a new mpc1000

take it home
swap out the new card reader for the old one
take back the mpc to GC and be like yo this thing is busted, i want my money back

how's the cf drive broken?

my 5 year old kid inserted the cf wrong way in the reader and the pins got all messed up inside. I took out the front panel of the MPC, took a pair of tweezer and a good lamp to see inside the reader, and calmly put the pins back in shape. Took me maybe 15 minutes to straighten up 10 pins (all the other were ok). Now it works fine again.
that's just a suggestion.

im in the same situation. my girlfriend broke the cf drive on my mpc so got a hard drive and havent looked back - would never have made the jump to HD if she hadnt had screwed my CF drive up

spent ages before getting the HD trying to source the part from akai to replace the CF drive - no luck

as for updating the OS

load it onto you hard drive, boot up, press MODE>PAD2 (load), navigate to the .bin file, highlight, then press DO IT. slightly different to booting up and holding down WINDOW but it works all the same
