It's true that a 404 does not have the same sequenceing power as an MPC but don't underestimate the box. It surely can sequence and quite nicely in its own peculiar way.

While I like the SP-404...it is only a one track sequencer and you cannot stack samples on pads...that makes it very simple. The MPC-500 has 48 midi tracks...that alone is worth the extra loot for many. The SP-404 has better effects though.

^^ you can stack samples on the 404 by resampling and pressing 2 or more pads at the same time.

I agree more/better effects in the 404,but the 500 is just any more functional sampler/sequencer..............but like J said there are workarounds for some things.

Maybe one day we'll see J using both the SP-404 and an Mpc. :)

I dunno.. reading these masseges really made me wonder. Who the hell really needs to make beats while riding a bus? If a beat hits you, just grab your cell phone, and speak the beat into the voice recorder and make the beat when you get home. Personally, i don't carry my drum collection with me, and half of you will be crying for a new O/S with hard driva capability, effects, 8 outs, and then your gonna want akai to come out with a portable analog synth to midi up to it just so you can make beats on the bus. Come on, lets be real...
Now if your going out of town for a few days/weeks, I think it understandable to have an MPC500.. I know I travel once in a while.. may even take it to work, but to say that only serious users will need this to make beats anytime they want is crazy. If I ever see someone making a beat while standnig in line at a grocery store I wouldn't say think ," wow, now that's a serious beat maker..." I'd probably assume something was wrong with him.

I don't even have to defend the 500 anymore it will defend itself with time, if you guys don't like or need it on "your" bus riding adventures then thats your choice. :)

i definitely see some points in rockstar's post, but there's also the idea of constant practice - do something allllll theeee timmmme and you will get incredibly good at it.

i definitely wouldn't say this machine is a piece of shit. because it's not for you doesn't make it a piece of shit. i still am grappling with the philosophy behind the pricing though...unfortunately portable and affordable are by no means synonymous.

i'd rather have a very portable and tiny laptop loaded with tons of music progs/samples/loops than an mpc500, i think, esp because my mpc1000 is really just about as portable as i can imagine needing an mpc to be.

Thats actually the main thing that draws me back from the MPC 500... Its just mind boggling that Akai is trying to push it out for $800 when you can get an MPC 1000 for just $200 more loaded with many more features... And as far as portability, I would have to agree with Antonym... sure the 1000 isn't battery powered, but hey, I'm not planning on making beats at my local coffee shop either... Bottom line is that its just simply not worth the price, hence my reasoning behind droppin 8 bills on a piece of shit....

Yeah, but that is not the same. On the 1000 you can put 4 samples on a pad...then another 4 samples on a pad...and hear what they sound like before you use them in a sequence... I like to make good drums sounds this way.
