Recording too low???

OK, so I've got some keys and sounds on my triton linked to the mpc thru midi, and i have a whole track and drums layed out on my mpc

i want to save the whole thing as a wav so im goin thru my mixer to my computer and recording. it just sounds so crappy and low like the levels and when i go to listen to it or put it in a car u have to turn it way up, but i feel like ive turned it up high when recording just enough before it starts red lining and i dont want any clipping or distortion, but it still is JUST TOO LOW..

any thoguhts or tips for fixing the situation...

how does everyone else get their tracks finished and onto their computer? regardless of it involves mixing in keys and sounds or just the drums from the mpc or samples...

yo Awthentic im havin the same problem with low sound quality--I gotta turn my stereo damn near to max to have it sound good...Im using wave pad and sometimes audacity---i normalize in aud or wave pad , and my burners software allows you to normalize the sound too, so i do it there too, it makes it a lil louder, but still not loud enuff...........If i figure this out i'll holla back, do the same 4 me---Im thinkin of gettin cubase or something decent(not som free prgm) or im going to pick me up an 8track recorder with a small HD and a cf card reader--they usually come w/ recording prorams for the pc, so u can transfer to pc to edit, and whatnot.....Peace,G

I'm not going to pretend to know how to master a set of tracks, so I'll recommend one thing and then shut up.

The thing that you can use here is a limiter. This is basically a compressor with a very high compression ratio, and a big volume knob. If you have a program that can use VST plug-ins, then go to www.kjaerhusaudio.com and download the 'Classic Master Limiter', a free VST plug-in that can do this. Very simple to use, one knob to control how loud you want the track to be.

If your program doesn't include VST plugs, then I think that audacity (audacity.sourceforge.net) has a limiter function. Just load in your final .wav, and start experimenting with the limiter until you get the desired loudness.

Limiting can be a tricky thing, and if you apply 'too much', then you'll distort the signal in a probably quite unpleasant way.

NOTE: This is one approach. I honestly have no idea if it's the 'best' way (or even if a 'best' way exists), so keep your eyes open for other suggestions. You could also try searching through the production techniques part of the this forum for more tips.

1.first guys describe your setup, like mixer's ,boards,soundcard,etc ,then we can figure out the best mix method.

2. here's mine. I have a mackie 1202-vlz 12channel,and the m-audio firewire. my mpc and keyboard is running into the mixer.mixer out into the soundcard,soundcard into the PC using Adobe Audition 1.5.

The main thing to have is a mixer and soundcard and a ok but good software to record into. The rest is mixing the sounds at a even db loudness,adding EQ,Comp,a little limiter. that's it..

Numark DD turntable and cd/dvd player into a Numark DJ Mixer into the MPC1000's RECORD IN, MPC1k stereo out and Alesis Micron stereo out to aq 2 channel DJ MIXER(ii know--im savin my loot for a decent 4 ch, mixer and a TASCAM 8 track recorder), the Pioneer DJ MIXER's amp out to a PEAVEY 250w pa receiver and the REC out to my PC's soundcards line in(not mic in but line in)-using a RCA to 1/4" stereo cable (a Y cable)... and for now im using Wave pad and i'll use audacity(but with audacity the input monitor meter registers when nothing is playing-so i dont know y it does that so i really dont use it)..... I just need a temporary solution, like i said b4 christmas i should have a 4ch mixer and a Tascam 8 track recorder w/ 10gb hd and CF reader, i think it comes with a software program too. AS soon as you can get a mixer and soundcard,it will be easier for you to be more organize with your setup.
