Shift Timing

does anyone use it & why?

Yuppers.....shifting the beat ahead a bit adds energy..think jazz.....shifting behind a bit puts it in the pocket....think blues.....think laid back....

you cats do this in step edit

i do it all the time. dont really shift my kicks too much unless im deliberately trying to make an "off" sound. but my hats, definately. my snare i shift according to the sample. just to make sure it matches up with the sample im using. percussion i usually leave timing off so it sounds more natural

I started using it more some time ago.It adds nice groove and vibe to the track (beat),can help achieving something like unique feeling.
Everyone knows that of course I'm just one more mpc user to appreciate this function.

Lately, I've been quantizing the kick and hat on the first downbeat of each measure exactly on the "one", then quantizing everything else one tick late. For some reason, it creates a "push-and-pull" effect that really works for me.

i've been making a point for all of my notes to be individually shifted, not group shifted unless i'm layering in grid edit.

i hate to ask but can y'all speak "english" for us newbies? (i.e. downbeat, grid edit, etc.)

how do you shift over just a little like in sampling i always stop using a sample because i can get the drums to match up or it to loop right i'm good with the mpc basics but not the shifting and stuff plz help me out

i use it all the time on my hats... nothing else really...

i use it on my hats mainly.

It is nice in the note repeat window because you can lay down a kick and snare, then mess with note repeat settings on your hihat adjusting the shifting and swing.

for jazz no quantization and no quantization = no shifting
... I wish we could shift non quantized data easily
I can do this on my mpc4000 by moving selected notes a few ticks but it takes a little longer and i dont think its possible with a 2000, 3000 or 60
