Using MIDI with my 1000 and motif...

I would like to use the sequenser on my mpc 1000 to record the voices from my motif. I have the MIDI IN from the 1000 going to the OUT of the motif and the IN from the Motif going to the OUT of the 1000. (Right now I have no samples loaded into the mpc) I CAN play the voices that are in motif with the pads on the 1000....
Heres where I am confused...I can record a sequence (say 6 bars, with the mpc) using the selected voice on the motif, but when I change the voice on the motif it chages on the mpc as well. (I'm sure this normal, but I would like the voice to stay put while I select another voice to add to it on a seperate track)
What I would like to do (and i'm not even sure if this is possible) is to use the mpc to record drums, strings, bass, ect...on seperate tracks on the mpc from the motif. Can I do this? Do I need some extra hardware? Or am I just hoping for the impossible?

I hope I made my question clear and I would appreciate any answers and help.

just got my 1k about a week ago and still getting used to the menus. i've been using a 2k for quite some time, and also use a 60 at the studio i work out of. we also have a motif and i must say that getting around on that thing has caused me some headaches. i do love the instrument itself though.
anyway, the basic idea is that you need to set corresponding midi channels between the motif and the 1k. my 1k is at the studio at the moment, but i'm pretty sure that you change the midi chanel in the main screen on the lower right. the motif is a bit more complicated. i think you have to go to voice(if it's not voice then it's the button one row up and 2 buttons over from the utility menu), then hit utility, then midi. i think that should get you where you're going or pretty close.

assign a track to midi 1 on the 1k, then find your sound whether it be drums, bass, whatever. then assign that sound to midi channel 1 as well.
that should do it for you. you should be able to assign 16 different channels. again i don't have my gear or manuals here with me so i'm not real sure if i left something out.

the motif had me going nuts for almost 2 weeks and i didn't even know it was the motif causing the problems. when i was trying to sync my 2k to pro tools, the mpc would play really sped up. and it seemed to be in triplets or something. the motif was also getting triggered, but it was also sending beat clock and somehow made the motu timepiece start echoeing. i thought it was the timepiece and was about ready to trash it when i noticed the motif was sending. as soon as i turned it off all was good.

anyway i hope you've got a better grasp on your problem. i'm sure there are plenty of tutorials about the basics of midi online. i think this has been addressed on this site also.

1) Whether or not a MPC program responds to a MIDI Program Change is a parameter in Program Mode, select the program name field and hit Window. It sounds like you want to set all your Programs to Off. The way I think it works is: if a PGM Change comes in, and a Program is loaded with that PGM Change number set, it switches, otherwise nothing happens.

Gotcha: you might want to change programs in the middle of a Sequence, but there are ways around that:
- keep the Sequences short, each Sequence has its own Program-to-Track assignments (so changing sequence sets programs without PGM Change messages).
- you can always use another track when you need a change of Program in a sequence.

But if you're switching tracks, you always need to double-check you have the right Program for the new track, so I'm not really sure where program changes on the Motif come into the question..?

2) The MPC1000 is not multitimbral over external MIDI: what gets played is the selected Program, and you can't say "Program 'Drums' on Ch10, Program 'Bass' on Ch11" and so on. It's multitimbral using its own internal sequencer, of course, with a different Program per sequence Track.

So to get multiple programs at once, what you could do is transfer the programmed MIDI from the Motif to the MPC using a MIDI file, then sync
the sequencers together.
