How to "audition" tempos

Is anyone aware of how to get the metronome going, and practice rhythms against it, while not actually recording anything? In other words, aside from the 1-bar default countdown, how can one play the pads to the metronome, without having to set loop lengths and go into record mode? [for the purpose of trying out different tempos]

for instance, I thought that perhaps if you muted the track you are recording to, while recording it, it would serve the purpose of allowing you to play along with the metronome, while muting the actual material you record...so you could play continuously while not actually hearing what's on the track you're recording to. It appears, however, that the MPC only mutes whatever PREVIOUSLY was on the track, and will audibly play back anything that you are currently laying to the track, even if track mute is on...

any thoughts?

turn the metronome on:

F2 CLICK > IN PLAY: > YES

The problem is not hearing the metronome, it's my wanting to have the metronome ticking off the time for as long as I want, while I play along to it, but not actually recording anything, so that I could figure out what tempo I want to record a beat to.

That's what episode's telling you to do. The metronome can be on during record ('In record') or play mode ('in play').

If you follow episode's directions then press play (or play start), you'll hear the metronome running, and can play along with nothing being recorded.
