1. The function which is called direct recording with AKAI OS
direct recording is gone, replaced with 8 continuous sample tracks (last 8 tracks out of 64). i don't really use them but probably will someday.
cd in is gone, too. probably not to be implemented. take that at face value, if you spend a lot of time sampling from cd and you can't play the cd from any other medium, then you're SOL
2. [konteiniasutoratsuku]
if this isn't completely obvious then i don't know what to say.
as for what makes the current os worth it - people should at least try out the grid edit. let me post a picture and see if i can explain, although i dont know if it will do it justice...
ok, you see how f2 is EVENT? when you press EVENT, f3-f6 change to what you see in the picture. TIME lets you push and pull the note back and forth 21 ticks in either direction - while still showing it on whatever TC value resolution you're currently viewing. when you've shifted a note, it appears with the symbols ">3" or w/e in the TIME parameter. when it comes to groove building, this is unspeakably good.
nothing new, per se, that you couldn't do before, but what we have is a more handy, precise and effective method of grid editing.
not to mention a vastly improved trim screen, much better designed load/save screen, pimped qlink sliders, stereo chopping (!! much more awesome than i had given it credit previously, i had scoffed at stereo but i would never go back). patched phrase is still mono, but pp is for suckers (that is until i figure out why it'd be useful to me

)
basically, it won't hurt anyone to try the os (you can always switch back w/ no problems) and see if it's worth it to them. one of the nicest things also is that the saving bugs are all done for. you can store much more stuff now without worrying about losing files, new folder freezes, or data corruption.
there's definitely more of a decision to be made when it comes to installing the os for the 2500 as opposed to the 1000. having seen both, i have to say that when it comes to bugs, workflow and functions, the jenius os is nicer, but the final call comes down to the individual user.
for now, at least. when qlink grid edit and other additional features get coded into the os's, there will really be no question about it, unless you REALLY REALLY need that cd rom feature.
