Data Wheel problems??

What up folks...I got a problem, and i was wondering if any of y'all havin the same problem, and if anyone can help me. My Data Wheel(MPC1000 0s2.1-Blue/Red) is real TOUCHy, like when im on the main screen and i scroll thru the Sequences and im at SQ11 and i want to be on SQ4 i'll scroll cntrclkws and i'll get close to my desired digit(or parameter depending on what screen im on) and i have trouble getting it to EX SQ4 ill get it after a few clicks forward and back-I mean it'll jump back a digit/parameter, and when i take my hand/fingaers off the DW it jumps backward 1 digit/param. The same thing happens in Trim mode,Pgm mode-Anywher you need the DW.. I can deal with it its not like i cant bangout and do my thing, but it gets irritating, and i get nervous and mad-since it cost me a grip and its the only MPC i got, i dont wanna be without it(cant believe i ever lived when i didnt own it yet!!), I dont wanna send it to VST and wait for god knows how long and worry bout somethin happenin to it when it aint in my possesion.(i know imma paranoid nervous cat--its the trees and 26 years of hard livin'-LOL!!4real tho!!)....... I dont want to send it to VST,but i'll buy the parts and get the repair info and directions from them and do the $@#t myself--wit the guidance of my Beatlovincratediggin disciples!! My MPC is 6 months old-bought brand new-2 adult users ONLY!!-Well taken care of,clean and dust free,Used regularly(OF COURSE-it aint a decoration), never abused. I have no other problems knock on wood.I need some help fellas. Sorry this post is long and cluttered, but i wanted to get it all out..Im mad and noid(and blazed or id be ragin' mad!!)Need my MPC back in normal order-I can still Make beats, but i need it and want it back to normal status!! Im thinking it could possibley be loose or something to that effect.....that would be easier to fix cause it wouldnt cost any $, i'm willing to by the parts from VST, but if i can fix 4 free...Y Not? The point im gettin at is I read a post bout a dudes 3000's dw doin exactly what mines is doin, so he tok of the top case and the DW just needed tightened--he did it and posted it was all good. I dont want to open my case if i dont know exactly how the DW is in there, i dont wanna F@#k anything up, because of lack of Knowledge. Also i dont want to void my warranty(6mos. left) cuz if the CPU goes or the mother board/circuit boards get fried im sendin it back-I'll wait however long 4 that..but this got DIY written all over it, cant be no harder than repairing and replacing the repaired pads back in(Specially all 16 w/ some soldering!!). If anybody got an PICS of the DW assembly(for a 1000-i seen other mods 2k,3k) i'd be grateful, and mad appreciative. Any suggestions,solutions,anything Please....... B4 it breaks and im F@#kEd. Like I said it scrolls thru everything no problem,its just touchy and jumpy-it wasnt like this when i got it. The DW seems a lil looser than brand new, but its probably cause its broken in now. Back again. I ordered a Rotary Encoder from VST(Nick helped me out a lil!!) It cost $8.49 but they have a $10 min so he charged me $10 and the S&h is $10 ( total $20). My problem is i cant seem to get an answer from anyone on this site...I guess im the only one to have a faulty data wheel(beside the dude who asked and got no real answer).... I know how to take off the top case(mad shouts to monophonic for the detailed info and photos) and i know u pull off the actual knob(data wheel) and the rotary encoder is underneath. My question is ,Is the rotary encoder fastened to the board with screws and/or solder?? i need to know so i dont f@#k my MPC up... I know how to solder , i just need some more specifics. If any1 has a photo of the DW and encoder or even a link to somewhere that does, i really need it b4 WEdnesday Oct. 11.; I seen a phot of a 2500's rotary encoder, but as we all know the DW on the 2500 is larger and thicker, more like a stereo volume knob, so i was wondering if the basic construction is the same? I see two holes that look like screw holes, but theres no screws in the holes(unless they were already removed when the picture was taken. So Basically im askin if the build of the DW/roteary encoder is the same in the 1k, or when i pull of the DW wheel there be a stud, type thing (like a bass treble or whatever knob on a mixer) or will it be just like the 2500's? and is there screws securing it to the board? do i have to remove the board or just the case and the knob?? Help!

Yo Nym,i just got the encoder and im going to run out to radio shack later on tonite and grab the solder, i pm'd u, u get it? im ready to repair my mpc, and need the help of a master...anyone else, all advice and help is welcomed...Thanx in advance.........

next is the tricky part. you need to take the board that the data wheel is attached to off the mpc. it's no scary thing, just take it slow. unscrew the screws (use a gently magnetic screwdriver if you can so you dont lose the screws inside the mpc). now look at the bottom right of the board. there's a little ribbon that goes into a connector that's in the board you're trying to get out. the ribbon slips out of the connector - look at it, explore it and find out the way to depress the connection so the ribbon slips out. then remove the board.

and does the Datawheel(the actual knob that u turn on the mpc)does that pull straight off-or is there a trick??..

pulls straight up and off. i took the opportunity to get goofy with mine, i sanded it flat and colored/painted it.

To get the encoder off do i have to remove any screws? Does the board have to be removed or disturbed in anyway? like is the actual solder joints on the underside?? Im not young nor stupid, nor underqualified to do some minor repair--its just that this is my baby, i cant afford to replace her, or be without her, I dont want to mess anything up...

no screws, just solder. flip it over and look at the underside. there are either 4 or 2 pins that are soldered into the board (i forget which). but here's the trick - loosen one, but don't completely remove it. go halfway on one, then the other, and back and forth until you're able to pull it out. it's a really safe procedure, just do NOT use acid core solder. this is indeed minor repair.

next, patch that new encoder in and gently solder it in. spin both to feel the difference. pretty clear, huh? when you get that new one in things are good as new, it feels great.

no, sorry. i've walked you through it pretty well though. you'll be ok. just take it slow. if your hands are shaking, breathe deep and remember that you're not being risky, it's perfectly safe. just keep your head about you.

You might want to try to avoid using any magnetized screwdrivers if you can.

haha well if you're particularly cautious, don't. i heard somewhere that it's no big deal but it doesn't hurt to be careful.

yeah, it should be ok, but I'm just overly cautious like that.

One more thing fellaz..i got the top case off and now i have jitters and a few more questions...It looks like the board the DW is on is also shared by the Rec Lvl and Vol knobs, and all the buttons on the right side of the 1000...Do i have to remove the REC level and Vol knobs after removing the top case? Do i have to disconnect any wire harnesses? the screws Nym talked about in this post are they the scres by the RecLvl/Vol Knob and the ones beside the PAD assembly? Im just a lil cautious like TBonus!! im mad noid!! From the directions Nym gave me it sounds simple, its just the details, that i need to know so i can calm down a lil more...! So is there other knobs,buttons and/or wire harnesses that need removed or undone before removing the data wheel knob and then the board screws??? Is there any short cables or funky cable placement i need to know about before taking the board out? Yo Nym, check ur PM's I hit u up again,basicvally same thing as this post..... Nuff Respect Due to Antonym!! Tha N*&&@ Knows his stuff-Technical and musical-I gotta tell u son, ur directions were to tha point and helpful-my pops helped me and my bro with tha desoldering and resoldering......Took 1 hr 25 minutes to open it remove the board,desolder out the faulty rotary encoder and resolder the new one in. I took my time and was calm about it.That Ribbon connector coming off tha pad chasis WAS a B!*ch!! tha other pin harnesses were ruff till i figured out how to undo them the right way...I had a lil trouble gettin tha case back on straight, but i took a deep breath,took a puff, and on it went.. B4 i even opened up tha MPC i turned the nub(knob)on the encoder and it was tight and smooth as opposed to mine which was loose and wobbly! You can feel and see the difference.....Im back to brand new baby!!! Thanx again Nym,mad respect and props!!! And everyone else that put in their 2 cents-Thanx, Truly Yours,G-Bo Anyone that has any technical difficulties or need any parts Holla @VST ask 4 Nick(especially if you DIY).
