Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Searched for this and could not find. Although, with the JJ team blessing 1000 owners with such a solid OS, I am sure I am double posting in some form, so appologies. But DAMN thier work is solid. I know the Classic and XL are different beasts, but can we ever expect to pay these folks for some serious work on the older models' OS? There have got to be alot of cats with a 2000XL that want to do some advanced things and would pay good money to see that happen. JJ, where you at?!?

nah they stated on their page that they can't do it. they don't have the original code...

I figured as much. Different animals, these machines.

so we can get that code!!

To be real honest, I'm happy with my 2000XL.I'm still learning new tricks after 5 years of owning the machine. It can do so much more than the manual tell you, just takes a wild imagination. I haven't outgrown it, and it serves my needs. :)

ya man, couldnt agree more...

ive had the 1k, and its a great machine...the new os is awesome, but in the long run...i export my beats into nuendo...

check this...

how many of yall are using battery 2.0 VSTI? Im using my MPC as a controller and NUENDO as my Operting system...samples in 24 bit...and it has sooooooooo much versatility with choppin/enveloping/bit changing, thats its a scary monster...

the xl is a beast...learn it, love it..

Obviously, you haven't used that new OS, cus it does way more than pong.
There is nothing 'wrong' with XL. If there were, I wouldn't have bought one years ago, and then another one last year. But upgrades are not for just for fixing problems, they are for adding features. I've been using an MPC since 1998. I know what it can and can't do. I am sorry that after five years you still don't know all of the features, but I'm glad your having fun. If your not interested in an upgrade, you don't have to reply to the post.

i dont think anyone would mind if JJ released a new os for the xl/2k .. I know i would use it and prolly even pay for it. But without the source code its not gunna happen. it could.. but would require complete disasm of the os bin's. would need to spend time MANUALLY mapping out all the functions in raw assembly. discovering what each address does for every byte of raw assembly code. without any type of mpc "emulator" that would aid in discovering what each value does this would mean years of work and would require a team. and the bins are most likly encrypted and compressed with some sort of in house tools to begin with. PLus I dont even think the xl could do too much more. slower cpu and less mem than the 1k. What else could they possibly add?

Step one I think would be too completly write and emulate each mpc's hardware.. just like the MAME team does with arcade PCB's and hardware..then after its written up could then start dumping all the os's and would be much easier to work with them values,. that would open the door for cutomizing anything really....

That would be the best way haha.

Yeah they would need the source codes, we discussed that already.
You are totally right about the processor in the XL. What more could it do? How bout setting up 16 midi tracks in one pass, the way the 2000 classic can? I sure wouldn't mind some grid programming with a zoom feature. What about bieng able to move unquantized events 'later' and 'earlier', the way you can on a 2000classic? How one-button batch import of .wavs? I could go on for pages, but I won't. Of course, I would like real-time filter/pitch/attack/release manipulation, but like you said this may be impossible without the older mpc processor.

I don't think it's realistic to expect a new OS for the older models either, but it would be fun to use if it was made. It's nothing I'm "waiting for". If I want a fully featured sampler, I'll buy one. I just wondered: these guys did such a good job...why'd they do it for the 1000? It's like, you got a machine that already does more, and then that's the one that gets more added to it? Plus, it's built like a piece of junk, so no, I don't want a 1000. Although, after the OS they work on, I probably will get one anyway!

Your right, some of those features would be nice. Does anyone know how JJ went about making the 1k os? How did he obtain the source? what prog lang was it in? how long did he work on it for? is the source available to anyone?

Mute groups like the 1000/2500 has would be nice. I need more than just two sometimes.

I'd pay to record mutes in a sequence...

All I want is to be able to sample while listening to my sequence! Such a basic feature that is missing on the XL! I was spoiled I suppose with the ASR-X but I always figured the XL could do this, but lately, I have been thinking of getting another MPC for this basic feature. I love my XL, but this would be AMAZING if homebrewers could work on it!

Right: 'Sample-in-Play'. A basic feature of a sampler that is vital and was left out. But I think this is more due to the processor, not the OS. That is, the engine itself is not fast enough to provide 'full duplex' recording. The 4000 is the first MPC model with sample-in-play, and I don't know why.
