I've been trying to get the patch phrase time stretch thing to work with the updated OS (2.01 & 1.0.5/updated 3.0 JJ) and I'm having trouble. I followed a tutorial online from the 2500 to a tee & read the manual, but I think there may be something I'm missing with the 1000.

Here's where I'm at:
1)Sample in trim mode
2)press CHOP or SLICE (depending on OS)
3)Set Tempo, convert to Patched Phrase
4)assign sample to pad
5)press 16 pads, pitch

...at that point (in theory) the sample should be spread on the pads in different pitches but with the same tempo (not speeding up the higher I go)

Everything works except for the last part. The sample is still speeding up. What am I doing wrong? I tried it with 2.0.1 & the 1.0.5 (update from 3.0 JJ). Holla atcha boy.

I see a lot of views but no replies. Are people just not using this feature? I can't imagine that. I know the heads on the 1000 forum were like..(in Scooby Doo voice) "Huh?". But I figured someone here would know. I'll keep checking.

Hey dj solo have you figured out yet how to do it/
Man I saw the video and I bugged out....That was crazy...
I've tried for a couple of hours and couldn't get it to work.

sorry man i've never patched a phrase, i can't help you

The crazy thing is that on the video he says that it works on a 1000 also but he was using a 2500.
Maybe it doesn't work yet on the 1000.
Anybody watched the video and figue out yet how to do it on the 1000,and get it to work correctly?

The most crazy thing with that video, apart that it´s bullsh*t to call what he´s doing for timestretching, is that nobody see´s what he´s actually doing. And, as always with Patched phrase, it has absolutely nothing to do with timestretching.

I refer to my answer to dj_solo´s (double)post in the MPC 1000 Forum:

No. At that point you´ll end up with what you described. I guess you read this thread and was inspired: http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=58413

As I stated there, that has nothing to do with timestretch. It´s just quantized sequencing of a pitched sample. The reason why it seems like it´s timestretching is the nature of the sample used, those short guitar hits don´t seem to change in length in different pitches just because they are so short. Using another kind of sample as source where there´s not that much silence you´ll hear what actually happens and the result will be dissatisfying.

It´s really natural if you think about what you´re actually doing:

PP = Locking a bunch of slices to the current TC. In reality not in anyway different from manually programing samples in the seq, just a more lazy approach.

16 levels / Pitch = Tuning a sample up and down by the standard means of pitch shifting, that is slowing down or speeding up the sample.

-----

There´s no way of having realtime or auto timestretch on the MPC 1000, and obviously not on the MPC 2500 either. There is a timestretch feature, use that if you want to timestretch, use PP if you´re to lazy to program your slices, use 16 levels / pitch if you want standard, speed based pitch shifting of a sample. One thing can´t do the other, the combination of two features don´t magically create some sort of transcending loophole that pushes the MPC to new levels of consciousness and new features. Your machine do what it does when you tell it to do it, nothing nore, nothing less.

Im so glad someone clarified this :P , I was gonna keep to myself but I had come to this conclusion after 2 times PP a sample and then having to go back and re-chop it and spread it out of over the pads. I am premier PP dispiesers (however you spell it). Does anyone ever feel like no matter the tempo of a PP there is always a silence in your loop somewhere:?:

Hey ryssen you are right, I kept trying and figured out that it all depends on your sample.
It's just creating chop points and spreading them accross the pads,it sounds like garbage on certain samples..

i might be out of my league regarding pp but i'm gonna say...it's always better to make a program out of your chops...use your mpc like recycle and reprogram/recreate the melody. esp now w/ the jj's individual note nudging in grid edit, recreating the original groove was never easier esp if you set the BPM a couple increments higher than what the original sample was, or downpitch all the chops so they overlap and blur out any rough spots.

I tried this stuff again last night till I passed out and here's what I found...

Exactly what that dude said about it locking the chops but not "stretching" them. So, with the proper tempo set (VERY IMPORTANT!!!), the base note sounded right. The higher I went up though, the beginnings of the chops were locked to the tempo, but sped up within their slices. So the faster it got, the bigger the spaces were.

So all that being said, how do I timestretch those slices. If each slice would stretch to the tempo, I'b be smooth sailing.

These machines must bend to our will, otherwise it will be complete chaos. You've seen Terminator, haven't you? One day they won't timestretch, the next day they're firing at you from their mothership. Don't say I didn't warn you.

As stated above: For timestretch, use the timestretch feature!
The MPC 1000 can not, and I mean not!!, timestretch in real time or by automation. You, the user, must instruct it what to do, in this case to either timestretch each slice (don´t use PP, period) to fit pitch at a certain BPM, or use the Pitch shift feature in Edit mode to tune each slice without changing it´s tempo.
Either way you choose, you have to do it manually, slice by slice and assign the slices to pads. There´s no shortcuts, no automatic, realtime toying. Go software if you so urgently need that.

Once again read up on or experiment to see what Patched phrase do, as there are no surprises that this so called realtime timestretching is impossible on the MPC 1000 and the machine can not be simulated / faked / bent into doing this by fiddling with Patched phrase. This method is like throwing up samples on every 8th of a seq, assign those samples to tune on a Q-link fader and be conffused when those samples don´t timestretch according to the pitch.

I haven't seen the "Timestretch" featue on my 1000. I followed the 2500 manual to it, but my edit & sample screens are different and don't have that option. I don't mind doing things manually, but if that Patched Phrase feature had a "timestretch" option, it would make a lot of sense. That's all I'm saying.
