1000 and the PC studio

hi people i realy cant decide whether or not to go for the MPC 1000, im just not 100% sure on what it would bring to my current PC studio set.
Could the peeps who use it with there PC/Mac setups let me know what they are gaining.

I have been using mine for about a month now and I haven't used my PC since.

At the end of the day it really depends on what you are after, are you happy with your PC setup?

For me the MPC inspires me to be more creative, as there are less things to distract you than on a PC when writing your music. On the MPC you can focus on the beat and nothing else.

What I am looking forward to next is hooking my MPC to the PC using the assignable outs, I can then play them through Cubase SX and fkuc about with the sounds even more.

thanks for the advice, what sorta beats do you make?

i play a lot of instruments, among them is drums. playing drums on a keyboard is retarded. playing on pads basically lets me play drum parts with my hands. just like playing real drums. the pads on other groove boxes may as well be keyboard keys by the way they feel. mpc's pads feel more like drums, especially the 1k.

for instance, instead of putting a layered bass drum onto one pad, i put one bass drum on each pad across the bottom. i use my fingers to play on the pad the way i might play a conga or dumbek or whatever. i dont do this with a lot of presicion (the rhythm is precise, but what pads i hit, in what combination of velocities is not precise). it keeps the sound from sounding too canned if you know what i mean.

there's a million reasons why mpc's are a great addition to a computer setup.

another huge reason is this big a$$ glowing noisy box i stare into while working on my mac - the computer monitor. that thing that takes all of my attention out of the sound and puts it into my eyes. i get to turn it off while i make music now.

My main love is UK Hip Hop...TaskForce, Skinnyman, Foreign Beggars, Jehst, Lewis Parker etc.

But I have also been into my D&B for time.

I just try to make what feels good to me at the moment, I got sick of using loops from mags such as future music, cm, on my PC as I didn't find it so easy to manipulate them into what I wanted to hear.

With the MPC I can start from scratch, as I don't like using loops that the next man has, I want something original.

I could not tell you exactly what sort of beats I make as I am still experimenting myself, just whatever I come up with! Still learning

im into hip hop but i do really like a lot of deep and jazz influenced house.

back to tiger vomit, it seems the main advantage of using the 1k with the Pc/mac is its pads, surely the MPD16 would do the job then?

That is one of its many advantages, sure you could use the MPD16 and connect it up with NI Battery, if thats all you want.

from what ive been reading in these threads its seems the the OS is a bit of a pain?

i havent used it, i wouldnt know. assuming the pads feel the same, there is also the matter of not needing a computer to make music,

the particular feel that mpc's have (whether or not they all have the same feel is irrelevant to me. i know the 1k has a cool feel to it, and that is what is important),

the actual sound quality of the mpc (wayyyy better than using something like battery and DP, which is how i was working much of the time pre-mpc). there's no stupid summing problems and the low end is awfully substantial compared to my DAW work

but if the pads thing would work for you, go for it! it aint about what I use to do stuff, $hit you aint even heard what i do! i could totally suck for all you know right?

basically all i can say is, yes, there are a ton of cool things to be done with an mpc that are unique to an mpc. try it out, if you like it - start using it.

good music can be made on anything. even without any instruments at all.

music is still music, even if it only exists in your brain. but that aint why we're here is it

my main atraction (beside the pads) is that u dont need your DAW all the time.
just wondering i know that the mpc is great for hip hop, but how about house? does anyone on the board use it for this?

I'd think it'd be good for whatever really. Can't think of any music made electronically that couldn't be done on an MPC.

Nah, that aint the case. The new os is a blast.

The main reason people use forums is to complain about their questions and issues, so remember that bias is there...


Because software can do pretty much anything these days, there are about 4 reasons to use an mpc::
1. It's not a computer! I work on computers all day and there's no way I'm gonna use em all nite too for my creative outlet..
2. You might prefer the all-in-one sampling/sequencing interface to some other option like Ableton Live etc .. (or u might not)
3. The pads. But then, as people mentioned, there are cheap 'pad only boxes'.
4. For playing shows, the thing is portable, sturdy, no firewire interfaces hanging off it, and the controller is built in, and you don't look like a goof staring at a laptop. F** I hate shows where someone is staring at a laptop.

For me it comes down to #1 and #4 with #3 as a bonus.
