mpc2000xl pads "doubling up", are they dead?

I just bought a used 2kxl and I've got a couple question. I've read a fair bit of the manual, so I understand the basic workings of the machine, but I do hope someone can answer these:

1. When pressing/hitting the pads on the MPC, a "double up" of the sound (kind of like a fast flam almost) occurs sometimes. And, it feels like I have to hit the pads VERY hard to get a velocity level similar to what it would be like if the "FULL LEVEL" button is pressed. Does this mean that the pads or the pad sensor on the mpc are dead? What can I do to fix this?

2. From reading the manual, it seems like you should be able to push "overdub" or "rec" buttons while a sequence is already playing, and do "punch in" type recording, but this doesn't work me. The sequence will be playing, but it won't punch in when I push the button. The only way to record it seems is to stop the sequence, and push/hold rec (or overdub) and play (or play start). Am I missing something here? This doesn't seem right...

yea my pads are like that 2 you have to hit it hard for it to get close but i also bought a used one so sry no help on that but i can ounch in on my mpc 2kxl at anytime once and a while it won't work but thats rare for me

when i first got mine, i had the same problem. just hit the pad in the middle and hit it firm. dont be all shy wit it. it will double up sometimes if you hit it a certain way

almost all newbies have this problem, it's you, not the machine.....practice

yeah i find hitting it with a flat finger will only trigger it once but if you tap it more twords the side with a finger nail it will double it.. Worried me when i first got it but now i actually find it to be a usefull feature.

I bought an Axiom 49 and its pads were doing this also. It was also my first time playing with drum pads, so I was kinda put off.

I then went ahead and bought the Korg Padkontrol. Its pads uses square sensors so u can hit the damn thing anywhere as soft/hard as youd like and it'll still play the sound perfectly. Its very great, but also has a weird feel to it, like the pads work almost too well.

Anyways, after I started figuring out how to actaully make drums, I had no problem on the axiom, and in fact it feels better than the Padkontrol.

Bascially threadstarter, if u have the cash, buy a padkontrol if u really need ur pads to be that responsive.

press pad with heel not with nail of your finger...its all about practising

You just have to get comfortable with the way you hit the pads. Try tapping the pad as if you were trying to touch something extremely hot (like an iron). That technique should eliminate the double-hit of the sample you're hearing. Don't worry, I had the exact same problem when I first got my MPC. I think it has something to do with a follow-up-hit when your finger bounces off the pad.

Thanks alot guys, that makes me feel better knowing I didn't get ripped off and all. It still won't punch in when I want it to but I managed to the footswitch hooked up to my yamaha s90 to punch in on overdub via midi. So that's word..any thoughts on why it won't punch in when i touch the button instead?

While the sequence is playing, are you pressing Overdub AND Play? I've found that you've got to press both buttons, or else it won't go into record/overdub.

Turn off the quantize and play to the click your timing with get better. If you still need to use timing set it to 1/16 or 1/32 until you feel the groove of the machine. We all started out the same way like riding a bike really.
