hey hey,

finally got around to installing this crazy new os, and must say it's pretty awesome!
One thing that I haven't read anything on that is super cool, is the ability to assign the TC shuffle and time shift to the q-links!

Makes dropping beats with note repeat way more flexible and human on the fly.

Check it!

next beat i'll start i will be exploring this feature a lot more, as it seems pretty badass.

you can set the swing to be global or per 1 pad and then set a ceiling/floor of swing/shift value, then use the qlink to make it happen in realtime while recording, correct?

this would be a LOT more useful if it worked the same as the "AFTER" button for qlinks do.

however, it's a really nice function and i will be using it soon.

you can assign the sliders to change the Time Correction Shuffle and/or shift the timing.... so if you have slider one set to control shuffle, and do a note repeat, if the slider is at the top it is maximum shuffle and if it's at the bottom there's no shuffle, in real-time so you don't have to stop and open the TC window. Then if you assign a timing shift to the other slider, it will play the the notes earlier or later by a bit... so using the same TC values, you can record your note repeats shifted in time so they don't hit at the same time.

To do it you just select the tempo from the main screen and hit window (i think).

it's good for hearing the difference in shuffle rather than guessing in the TC window.

I don't think you can set the ceiling/floor for the shift, but i could be wrong, i just got the new os so I'm still finding my way around. the problem with the shift timing is that it take a little getting use to where the 0 point is.
But with a little practice it works nicely for hitting pads a little bit off the beat.

Anyways, it's definetely a nice new feature, and to me is worth the 30 bones alone.

definitely. damn, this is stupidly awesome and simple, why the HELL wasn't this programmed in the first place

that's why the os is incredible, it connects really simple dots.

yea, it really makes refining the shuffle on the fly so easy and fun.
All hail JJ!

this would be 100% better if you could use the qlink to edit the timing of samples after they had been recorded in, though.

it's a little ungainly to play while moving the slider at the same time.

seems like the AFTER button could come in handy here.

also, i was wrong when i said this:

set a ceiling/floor of swing/shift value

it'd also be nice if there were ceiling and threshold limits, but there are not. this makes editing a little less accurate than if you could set a ceiling and threshold.

Yea, an after feature would be super nice...
My rm1x has knobs for changing note length, timing shift, note harmonize, midi delay and timing multiply or divide for affecting recorded tracks.

It would be pretty cool to have those type of functions available to the q-links in the mpc...

but being able to do it on recording input is still a big improvement.

also, for note shift, the qlink only goes back in time - the latest integer you can shift is 2 ahead, while the earliest is -23 ticks.

here's a bug - say you're in grid edit and you're overdubbing in notes. using qlink w/ time correct works great - say you want your first overdub to have no time correction, and your next to have 100% time correction.

however, doing the same thing w/ time shift doesn't work - each note is overdubbed exactly where it is, ignoring the qlink setting.

i'm betting that with qlink edit in grid, we'll be able to view midi graph type edit screens of our quantise/time shift patterns...

Co-sign!!

I would really like to see this in a future update. To hear how a track I just layed down would sound with different shifting and shuffle on the fly, and then be able to just overdub the real time changes.

YES absolutely, but the after effect has to be programmably multi-pad specific. like if i wanted to hear the shift on my hats, C1-4, but not the rest of them, i could set it to be like that. similar to how you set which pad(s) you apply your swing to.

this would be so slick. and i bet it'll come.
just when i thought the mpc style sequencer couldn't be better, we encountered the jenius grid. damn. this whole discovery of this function has completely changed the way i make drum patterns. complete third dimension to my creation of a groove template.

i went into this song i was workin on previously that has these real catchy drums to it and reworked the drums completely using the qlinks. same pattern, better swingwork. the result as was astounding.

i've never been able to actualize what i had in my head so well as when i started using this function.

BIG THANKS TO MELTON for making me check it.

peace.

nice!
no problem!

man we need to get 1/4 added to the TC options now this is in

co-sign on the realtime needed - this function needs to be available on playback on a per pad basis as nym describes

it reminds me of when you cut up breaks on two turntables and throw the offbeat snare in to funk it up
