Question for the MPC Gurus,Veterans, and die hard samplist

hey first of all thanks for your help.

my situation is this, i've got a 1000 and I'm getting to grips with it, I use it together with software and I'm doing well.
but!
I'd like to know how you go about organizing your songs, beats, compositions. How do you save the stuff you're working on, do you use only 1 method or do you have several methods. I'm really trying to find out what everybodys methodology is. the mpc 1000 only has 128 megs of memory and coming from mainly using software i'm feeling that I have to learn better ways of managing the memory. are most of you using hard drives n the mpc or compact flash or both.

but mainly i'm very interested in your methods for organizing and saving your samples and songs.

yo. just to let you know when it comes to making beats on the mpc. 128 megs of memory is like a fat kid in a candystore... give it some time youll see what i mean

me personally i use an harddrive (40 gigs) + memorycards (i had these b4 the harddrive i just keep old stuff on there). and if you want to save your precious beats properly i suggest you label everything. and also keep your projects in folders... oh yeah and reformat your harddrive and cards when you update the os.... what else



save everything separate... i keep a folder for uncut samples.... etc etc.
blah blah...

I have a hard drive, so just have a load of folders called 'beat 1' 'beat 2' etc, and do 'save entire memory' into a new folder each time I'm making something new. It means I'm re-saving the same sample loads of times, but it should stilll take a while to fill 80gb...

what os is this regarding?

Folder Structure:

- SAMPLES
- Drums
- Bassdrums
- Hi Hats
- open
- close
- Snares
- Percussion
etc.

BEATS
- Saved in new folger as a a Project named by date created...

ARRANGEMENT:
- mostly unarranged 4 bar loops
- If I wan't to build a song's structure I use a DAW and build from there...

That's basically it

well. when it comes to songs

ill make a folder with named sequences and sample programs in it (you can have 24 programs max) if its hot (and it has to b ) ill jot down on a separate piece of paper all the samples drums etc.. used and the pad data and try to compress the 10 to 15 programs down to 1 (thats 64 to 256 samples max) then save the new program and samples and sequences in a separate folder.

hint: label your tracks ex: 808bass

hint: step edit to translate the new pad info

hint: simult

add fx and compression in the mpc if needed

then save it as a project file. in an new folder

now with this method you can go on a sample frenzy
(you can do crazy damage with 128mb of memory)


make a gang of sequences... pick the hottest of the litter. and save on memory when you are working on something dope! so when you cut the mpc off and back on youll be on a clean slate with nothing else but your good idea!

aint nothing like running out of memory when you want to do something else to a sequence. like test another sample see if it blends with the sequence or chop a sample to a new program for breakdowns ... i can go on for hours about boxing myself in a corner. but thats wisdom for you with the harddrive, file management away from my pc is eons better!

good. you never know around these parts.

even in the jj os, there are still some issues w/ saving although the vast majority of nasty ones have been taken care of - although people should still be backing up their info.

when i start from scratch, i always create a new folder and save the entire mem.

when i load old projects from a fresh turn on, i load that folder.

here's the tricky part - when i load old projects when i have a project on my mpc already, i go to the load folder page and hit CLEAR, which gets rid of all the old junk in there. then i load the folder itself. THEN i go back into the load screen and load all seqs and songs, because for some reason, when you load this way, your goddamn mpc only loads all pgms and samples, not all songs n seq.

shit what's that all about, i guess the jjs are aware of this and are about to fix it?

presumeably. it doesn't lead to you losing any work, it's just an irritating vestige from teh original design.

nym istead of loading folders load the prj file inside the folder

clears mem an loads new folder every time for me - i got tht problem u was havin when i was loading folders. bad habit from 2.1
