Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

What's up people

Okay...so I record my midi drums from the mpc2000 into logic. Then I use hyperdraw in logic to automate the pan function, so the cymbal travels from left to right speaker. In logic, the automation is working, but the mpc won't pan the drums. How do I get the mpc to recognize this...is this even possible?

well while I'm at it...the only thing I can get the mpc to respond to when editing midi data in logic (besides moving notes around) is the velocity. I can't shorten in the note in logic and have the mpc cut the duration of the note...anyone know how to do all this stuff?...does it have anything to do with syncing the machines up?

thanks.

you'll have to switch all your samples to note-off if you want to affect the duration of them from logic. velocity should work by changing the colour of the blocks, dragging down or with the velocity tool. i cant remeber precisely. its all do-able.

I just got myself a Logic-based setup, will definitely keep you informed if I figure this out. One thing I've never understood- the MPC itself has no assign for channel, so how do you record MIDI data on an outside sequencer anyway? That is, MIDI data on the external sequencer triggering sounds from the MPC in Drum mode.

Anyhow, having fun right now finally being able to trigger sounds in Reason from my MPC and keyboard, this will definitely speed up my non-vinyl based track construction process. On that note, how do you record Reason MIDI tracks using Logic and ReWire? I have just set this rig up tonight and haven't had much time with it yet. The manual is huge!

Peace!

"for the experts"

Another missed opportunity since I do not qualify to read the post. I will stick to the `for the dummy` posts.

Oh - that's nice to hear, mpc3000. It's precisely those sort of comments that make this forum such a treasure. Keep up the good (and useful!) work.

thync - the mpc can assign sounds to midi channel...look under the the track, next to Drum (at least in the 2000) - the jog wheel can assign port and channel. Make sure that Soft thru is set to off as well, otherwise it will feedback.

I know how to use the MPC to send control data on 16 channels, but that's all for controlling external devices. The MPC has no channel assignment for its OWN sounds. The 32 channels the MPC can access are for two chains of MIDI devices outside the unit. This makes sense when sequencing a software drum machine or what have you, but I fail to understand how you can record MPC sound sequences themselves into DAW software.

well, I'm recording midi sequences into logic via the mpc, and this data in logic is then triggering the mpc to play, which is what you are trying to do, right? I guess what I'm doing (bear with me, I'm kind of new to this) is using the mpc just to control its own internal sounds via logic...I just go mpc midi out into the midi interface, out of the midi interface back into the mpc...set up the mpc in logic environment as a "multi instrument" (different sounds can play back on one channel) - voila! try it out, just make sure you set Soft Thru to off on the midi screen, and put the drum to 1A or whatever port you are using...what I'm finding is that since it's a multi instrument, there is no need to record different sounds on different midi channels...you can use one channel for everything

Heya.

I've messed with recording sequence output from the MPC into Logic, and have had no success recording internal sequences, either with a channel/port selected or with it set to off. (as it should be as you're not triggering external gear) Are you on an XL or a non-XL? I'm on the former. I can record external gear sequences into Logic fine, but am unable to record anything whatsoever as to internal (Drum) data.

I hear what you're doing but am not following. Unless there's some hidden MIDI channel which the MPC runs on (?!) how is Logic able to control it?

Will try it out again with another soft sequencer, as I'm eliminating the Logic setup in favor of a better PC-supported sequencer and a different audio interface for my computer. I've got a Mia MIDI to play with for the moment, so will post whenever I figure something out.

Peace,

hmmm

well, I'm on the 2000...I don't know, I just went midi out to logic, made a multi-instrument object in the environment (maybe that's it?)...also, I have the midi channel assigned to "all" in logic, as I'm not using midi for keyboards currently...

you have to cable that multi instrument to you logic instrument that you are triggering. the problem that i am having is when using the note repeat button on the mpc no note off messages are being sent. i don't know if this is an mpc bug or what.

You realize this thread is almost 3 years old? The author probably got the hang of it by now..

lol. didn't notice, but the thing about this web thing is that other people read it too i think. otherwise i woulda pm'd him. good lookin though.

trying to figure out my own note off problem now.
