I'm of the opinion that its not actually the wheel itself but the mech that the wheel sits on. So replacing the wheel wouldnt actually help - perhaps?

Good question. I'll be sure to find out.

I dont understand why people is so hostile just for a topic, coz is negative...lol
Data Wheel of 2500 is s.hit, thats it, if its possible to replace it ill be one of the first with Shane to do it.
If people should post just how satisfied they are with 2500 this section of forum would be just unuseful
just my 2c

a voice of reason... jeez... some people feel just cause they buy something that it must be perfect... if that was the case people wouldn't have gear custome built for them... anyways - ill be calling a akai in a bit and hopefully i will find some kind of solution...

Hey Tough Guy... let's hear your work. I would love to hear if your beats, i'm sorry - SONGS (if you make songs and not just beats) are as slick as your tongue? Or if your beats sound just like the next guy with a sampler and 16 pads. lol.

You have anything to post to show off your disrespectful mouth?

Anyone want to peep my S H I T it's right here...

OK. So I spoke to Akai and got the part number. I emailed my friend the information. Fingers crossed he will find a replacement for this part. Akai said it was a rotary encoder. I'm not no engineer but I am assuming this may mean more then just replacing the plastic wheel. Once I find out more, I'll let those who are interested know.

yeah, rotary encoders. i replaced one in my 1000. you can get em from VST. i actually think they're interchangeable per machine, but i'm not positive. if they are, it's worth doing.

as for the "Feeling cheap" thing, is it because it clicks? have you noticed part failure? apparently, this is a problem with the 2000/2000xl too after a LOT of use. again quoting a brief convo w/ nick.

are you just getting another 2500 encoder? if so, why? unless yours is broken, it's gonna be the same piece, right?

what i'd suggest doing is doing more research and finding out if the 2000 encoder would work in the 2500's place. that way you could just swap them out. i bet Nick would help you out there.

just got off the phone w/ nick (and his tech, vicariously)

they said that swapping em out should work, it's just the issue of mounting the wheel into the encoder itself - due to measurement differences, etc. i mean, you could always make your own wheel but we're getting extravagant here.

HOWEVER. this is what he also said.

the 2000 wheel breaks down as much if not even more than the 2500. he said out of the three, the 1000, 2000, and 2500, that the 2500 has what looks like the toughest wheel.

he said that people wizz that thing around real fast and that its used so much and so enthusiastically that it breaks the solder eventually, or the gear itself gets wound down.

the issue w/ the 1000 and 2500 buttons is that they CLICK - and the audible clicking is somewhat distracting. this is why i might consider putting the older version wheel into my machine.

Dude... you kick ass man! YES! The clicking is damn ridiculous!!!! It adds to the experience of it feeling cheap when bundled with that silver plastic wheel!

You have helped greatly man. I will definitely look into your suggestion about swapping.

i was interested in finding another encoder that had a better feel to it... brushed aluminum perhaps? lol... I wasn't sure what is available out there...

well honestly if it's only asthetics that you're going after, we've really ranged away from objectivity. esp if you're technically downgrading to a less robust part. however, the clicking is REALLY poorly designed. i mean hell, you could sample that and use it as a shaker. anything that's making that kind of noise while you're playing back samples/seqs is distracting....

but despite everything, my 1000's doesn't bother me at all. a matter of being accustomed to it, i think.

now a matter of semantics - the "rotary encoder" is the piece underneath the "data wheel." take care to use proper terminology when ordering parts. also, take measurements and be sure that the 2000's wheel will fit in the 2500 casing, otherwise you're shit out of luck unless you wanna do some welding...hah

I just got off the phone with Nick... He suggested it may be possible but extreme care needs to be takin as not to damage the board. I'll see how this project progresses in the meantime I ordered a set of black pads :) Anyone interested, they may stop making the black pads soon so if you are hestitating - might wanna just grab'em.

Also, anyone know where to find any green pads?

^^that does sound logical. Why not just get used to it?? Akai made the 2000xl wheel and they also made this wheel(2500) if they would have felt that the 2000's wheel was better in design i'm sure they would have put the same wheel on the 2500.They both do the same job, right??

this doesn't imply to the thread starter, but has anyone even broken a data wheel yet?? Just because it feels cheap doesn't mean that it is.

don't attempt to analyze the logic behind akai's engineering decisions (1000 pads???!), you'll turn into an ouroboros

yes... the data wheel feels cheap to me (ie silver and might as well be something like real aluminum or metal) and the clicking of the encoder is harassing and adds to the cheapness of it i believe...

im sure one can get use to it, but why does one have to? i posted this last night as i was workin on a project and i constantly heard the clicking sound i was zipping through shit.... honestly, i don't need the auditory reference to know i made a change...
