whazup fellers!

have a quest regarding sample rates! was operating 4k initially at 44,1 khz sampling rate! in the past months i switched to 96! since the 4k fx's still suck i'll stay like this but it kinda sucks that at 96 one just can use 2 fx's so once the fx's will be allright (hopefully next os update) i'll go back to 44 khz!

my quests

1. i m entering a hardcore sampling phase! tomorrow i ll set up the turntables of a friend of mine and sample all my old vinyl! my quest is: should i sample at 44 or 96! i prefer samplin at 96! ... just, if a do a song with lots of samples operatin at 96 khz! if i later on switch to 44 khz in order to have 4 fx's how many probs will i face when i want to use the 96 khz samples :?: in other words: does the 4k (runnin on 44khz global settin) automatically upload 96 khz samples at 44khz or do i have to reconvert them?

2. i wonder what sampling rate you are using on your mpc 4k :?:

any suggestion or own experience is welcome

Its a good read.

The process that an A/D converter uses to capture an analog signal is called sampling. Sampling is like taking a snapshot of the sound wave. This creates a stepped representation of the electrical signal. When computers digitize sound, the computer takes snapshots of the sound at fixed points. A digitized version of the above wave might look something like this:
While the shape is similar to the analog wave, they are not exactly the same. The more often that the computer takes those pictures of the sound, the closer to the original it will sound. The number of times per second that a computer takes that snapshot is refereed to as the "Sampling Rate ". The higher the sampling rate, the more samples taken per second. There are many different common sampling rates that you might see:
44.1 kHz = 44,100 Samples per second - This is the standard for CD's
48 kHz
88.2 kHz
96 kHz

Bit Depth
The other aspect of how computers digitize the audio is the "resolution" or "bit rate"..The resolution of a sample represents its dynamic range, or levels of volume. The higher the resolution, the greater the dynamic range; and the lower the resolution, the less the dynamic range. For example, a 1-bit system can only represent two levels of volume - off or on (0 or 1). A 2-bit system can represent four levels of volume - off, soft, medium or loud (00, 01, 10, 11). A typical resolution is 16-bit, which is the resolution used for Audio CDs. A 16-bit resolution can represent 65,536 (or 96 dB) levels of dynamic range. A 32-bit system can represent 1,048,576 (or 192 dB) levels of dynamic range. That is over one million levels of dynamic range!

Just a little something to show the diffrence between the to, a 24 bit sample will make anything sound a louder because of the snapshots of the sound takin. Even if your sampling from a 16bit sound to 24bit.

i've read your article already a few days ago! it is o.k. but it doesn't answer my quest!

so, anyone who has a suggestion to answer my quest or is just in the mood to say which samplin rate he is usin or just wants to talk about pros & contras of 44,1 and 96 khz samplin rates (regardin the 4k) - give it a go!

anyone switched back from 96 to 44,1 khz?

i sample at 44 and recommend it if you arent' processing your sounds too much. it's not for effects reasons, but on mastering i don't have a decent unit to dither with and i've noticed some fidelity issues when mixing down from 24 to 16-bit CDmaster.

there are a number of plug-in's available if you're running decent computer software, which i'm not so it's an issue.

i really think it depends from track to track as well, depending on your style on what's going on musically with the passages. acoustic performances usually are at 96 for me, while i keep things in the 44 realm when sampling from digital sources like drum machines/synths etc.

for vinyl i would go 96 as you might want to run some filters over it to clean or boost the recording and want the higher bit for signal degredation.

anyway my concern is still the same! i'll sample lots of sounds in the next days! i m not bothered yet with probs i face when mastering everythin!

my concern is: am i able to use my own samples (recorded at 96 khz) once i switch back the 4k to 44,1 khz (global setting)! if so, my prob is solved and i'll sample 96 khz str8 away!

if i have to re-convert them to 44,1 khz i switch back right now to 44,1!

what sounds better is the ???

i mean does 96 mean more transparency and less phatness for drum sounds or not?

becoz the 4k is a 24bit 96khz sampler i thought it might sound too tinny and flat at 96khz

maybe 44.1 is fatter for drums.

Not fatter, maybe grittier and nasty. Bit depth is for more dynamics, sample rate is for clearency of the frequencys
