Midi Controller and 1k question

I bought a Korg K25 midi controller for my 1k the other day. I have never used a midi controller on the 1k before, and I have a concern. The pitch and modulation wheel has NO effect on the samples whatsoever. Is that normal with the 1k? The keys work fine. I'm just wondering if perhaps the pitch and mod wheel doesn't work because the 1k isn't a full fledged sampler?

checkyour manual and make sure your mp can recieve that kind of data...which i doubt, but dont worry your mp is a full fledged sampler. you can use the qlinks to do pitch bend...if nothing else buy a s5000

The 1K will record pitch bend and modulation events in the sequencer, but the sampler does not respond to those messages; in essence, you can sequence these things for outboard gear, but not the 1K itself.

ahh, ok. So what your saying is that if I had a synth it would record that data in the sequencer because pitch wheel and modulation data would be effecting the sounds in the synth itself. However, the 1k will not react to pitch wheel and modulation info from a midi controller to effect the samples within the 1k?

i've been browsing around for a while at controllers for the MPC1000 and one caught my eye...

i would be using it for basslines and synths

i will be using reason as a module soon and i want something that will control the reason sounds along with other soft synths.

has anyone used this?

i noticed that it comes with the bass station soft synth as well.

can i use this controller, the MPC1000, and the PC to operate a softsynth?

or do i have to have a seperate midi interface?

it seems to me like i could use softsynths just by using USB to the PC and Midi to the MPC.

what i'm asking is, if i picked up something like that Novation, would i need anything else to control the sounds?

yeah the novation should be fine. be aware that it doesn't have any midi in, so you couldn't run the mpc through it. as for playing notes on the keyboard and recording them in the mpc, you'll nedd an additional midi interface, so that the signal goes from the keyboard, through the mpc, and finally to the pc.

so without the additional interface i wouldn't be able to sequence the soft synths into the MPC?

i'm not sure the advantage of having the midi in port?

i'm just trying to record software sounds into the MPC, then record the output to my recorder.

when these keyboards are connected via usb, they don't send midi data out of their midi out port. so you need it to go keyboard->mpc->pc, so the midi notes that the keyboard produces go through the mpc, allowing it to record them, as well as pass them through to the pc.

so if i bought the novation and a power adapter i could skip the usb and go directly to the MPC.

then the MPC would go out to the additional interface?

yep, it should go something like this...

midi controller [midi out] --> [midi in] MPC [midi out] --> [midi in] PC midi interface [usb to pc]

This should allow you to sequence your PC's soft synths from your mpc midi tracks which can be input from your midi controller keyboard. You might want a midi out from your PC midi interface going back out to your mpc if you want to slave it to the midi clock of your computer program for tracking.

Now if you just want to record the audio of the soft synths into your mpc, you can just plug in the usb from your midi controller straight into your pc (if your controller has usb), and connect the audio outs from your pc into the audio ins of the mpc. But then you can't sequence the soft synths from your mpc.
