Need Help with Digital Ins And Outs

I'm trying to use the digital ins and outs on the 1k for the 1st time tonight. I went out and bought digital coaxial cables so I can try this. I'm not getting ANY sound. Is there a setting I have to switch on the 1k or my Interface? I'm using a Tascam US-144. Need some help here.

I notice on the control panel for my us-144 it says that I'm getting a valid 44.1 khz signal, but why no sound? When I hook things up analog it's fine, but I bought these cables so I could hear for myself the difference.

This is with the Akai OS?

Is it possible that the SPDIF on your interface is on mute?

I'm using os 4.12 JJ. I guess it's possible the digital ins could be on mute. but I don't see a way of unmuting them.

I'm still on OS 4.11 and SPDIF works fine.

Follow these simple instructions and let me know if this helps...

1. MODE + PAD 8 (MIXER)
2. F5 (INPUT)
3. Set Input Thru to ON
4. Set Source to DIGITAL
5. Set Level to 100 (which is probably set as default. if not, turn it up)

From your DAW, play any audio file you want. Make sure whatever software you use is configured so the audio plays through your soundcard/interface's SPDIF output.

Also make sure you have the SPDIF cable connected correctly. It's possible that you may have the connection reversed. SPDIF OUT on your interface is white. SPDIF IN will be red.

When I was talking about the SPDIF being muted, I was referring to the software for the audio interface on your DAW.

In the control panel for the us-144 there is only 3 options: Audio Performance (latency settings), Sample Clock Source (Automatic and Internal - supposed to be set to automatic when using digital ins and outs, which I do have it set to), and Digital Output Format (s/pdif and aes/ebu - I have it set to s/pdif)

I tried getting a wav to play through the input thru on the MPC and still no dice. I have a cd player that has spdif and that plays just fine on the input thru digital settings on the MPC.

So, I'm still not getting digital in or out sound on the interface even though the control panel does tell me I have a valid signal.

okay, that's good that you got the mpc working with the cd player. as for your audio interface, i'm not familiar with it at all. however, on my echo mia card, i have my SPDIF clock source set to internal by default. when i set mine to SPDIF, all i get is a hissing white noise (it still indicates a signal as well). try setting your clock to internal and see if that works.

On this card setting to internal actually turns the spdif connections off completely. It even says so in the manual. I think there may be something wrong with the unit itself now.

yeah, that could be possible. i'd suggest contacting their customer support if you've had the card for a while. if you havent owned it that long and you're able to return it, that may be your best bet.

Yeah, I just got it last week. I think I'm going to try and return it.

Ok, I got it working. I talked to Tascam support. Apparently because the us-144 isn't a very high end device it doesn't do spdif standalone whatsoever. I actually NEED a program such as cubase to route the signals back to the us-144 before I will get any sound. I have to figure out how to get it working on adobe audition 1.5 now.

cool deal. Glad to see that Tascam is good on their technical suport. I never used Adobe Audition before, but hopefully it's just a matter of selecting the Tascam in your audio device preferences. I've noticed quite a few people on these forums use Audition, so someone's bound to chime in with some advice if it's not as straight-forward as I would imagine.
