does anyone know how many mpc2kxl models where manufactured?

yeah, dgny I wonder if the number (21) in your serial is some factory that does the assemble ...

I bought it around a year and half ago third hand so not entirely sure. Did this; http://www.mpc2000xl.com/secret.htm and my screen showed last build 2002. Not sure if this was when it was build or when the os was updated. Does anyone know what the first screen on this page does?

Either that, or some employee identifying number, or the features that is was shipped with from the factory. No custom paint job, 100mb zip drive, Red Akai starter sounds zip disk.

Pure curiosity + so many people keeps talking about software taking over the hardware based music production ... I just want to know since the AKAIPROFESSIONAL keeps expanding with different models ... during a short period of time I've seen an mpc 1000 come out, now blue colours on the mpc 4000 and 2000xl model. + the updated version of the mpc2kxl with multi card reader. a new version of the mpc 1000 and 4000 in the mpc 2500 version. a black mpc 1000...... that just got me thinking if it is really the software taking of the hardware.... when it comes to producing music.....

since the mpc is a hip hop producers standard.

and the hip hop is now a multi billion industry .

how comes so many people talking about the softwares will take out hardware based equipment....

even if the music production is very easily done on softwares and computers
and it's gotten so much better during the recent years... and most started editing music on their computers.

when you enter a "real music recording studio" we still see hardware based consoles ....
why? hardware based equipment has AMPLIFIERS in which computers don't have.

ME. 10275-00183 got mine late 2002 or after newyear... dont remember anymore

i bought mine in 2001 second hand, and my serial number is 80025-00742.

that hidden screen shows the date of the OS and not the date manufactured, because mine says 2002 as well, and obviously my mpc wasn't built after i had already had it for a year.

There's a good chance that the serial numbering DOESN'T run in sequence and is infact a "code". For example, Gibson guitars have an 8 digit serial number that's interpreted like this;

YDDDYPPP
YY is the production year
DDD is the day of the year
PPP is the plant designation and/or instrument rank.

maneeeeeeee i got one of the original MPC 2000 when it came fesh off tha stock.

i bought mine on ebay so i dont know when it was bought but its in brand new condition if that matters

That's what we are trying to figure out.

I got mine brand new in 1999.

My seriel # is

89925 - 00606

so what does that mean?

the second two digits are 99 that'd make sense that thats the year made

your guys are like 01, 02, 03 etc. the second two digits could be the year made? Everyone who said they got theres at a certian year, the second two digits are all the same year as they said or before.

then nobody should have second two digits before 99 or after 06 or whatever.

This could be useful for anyone buying a used mpc to know how old it is. Mines a senior citizen.

Anyone else got some milky serial numbers to share.

Good deduction brainstorm. That makes sense. I also notice that we all have "00" as the sixth and seventh digit.
