TIMESTRETCH?

WHATZ GOOD PPL? IVE HEARD U CAN TIMESTRETCH SAMPLES WITH THE 1K...IVE SEEN THE VIDEOS ON THE NET BUT I DONT HAVE THE FEATURE THEYRE USING,I THINK ITS PHRASE SHIFT OR SOMETHING? DOES ANYONE KNOW IF I NEED AN UPDATE OR SOMETHING COZ I DEFINATELY SAW A VIDEO USING THIS FEATURE ON A 1K? AND I DEFINATELY DONT HAVE IT....ANY INFO WOULD BE DOPE...THANKZ.....

Don't trip homie! A lot of these cats are super elitist and expect that all newcomers have read every single back catalogue post about every topic before they posted a question. I posted the same question a while ago and I'm not at all offended that someone else asked it because Timestretch is one of the DOPEST features on the new OS and I us it ALL the time.

You do have to upgrade your OS because the original 1000 OS doesn't have it (actaually I never really checked that before I upgraded, maybe it does, don't quote me on that). The feature you're talking about on the video is "patch phrase", which actually DOESN'T do what is looks like it does. What Patch Phrase does is lock a small chopped sample to a tempo, but when you're dealing with a complex sample, it doesn't really work. The reason that works in the video is because that guys sample is just little hits with space in between them. It WILL work for something like that because of those long spaces, but will not stretch any sample to a tempo (it's a long explanation that I won't go into, don't use patch phrase).

The way you Timestretch with the new OS' is when you're in Trim mode (try it on the OS you have, it may be there), you press the Edit button. There you can scroll through a variety of features including "Discard", "Pitch Shift", "Time Stretch", etc. There you can set the desired tempo you wish to stretch to, but sometimes it's trial and error. Often I need to lock a sample to a certain key (in program mode with the pitch), then I timestretch it to the tempo. It sometimes takes a few tries before I get the right tempo becuase I'm tweaking it so much. You can't timestretch stuff too much or it gets kind of distorted. Anyway, the feature is great and if it's not on your OS, I highly recommend upgrading. Don't believe that video though, it's not fake, but VERY misleading.

The Distortion you mentioned when you time stretch

But the thing i dont get is even if i time stretch a sample from lets say 90.0 tempo to 85.0 it still gets distorted.

Do you know any solution to this????

There's really no solution except getting a real good software based program to do it, like Serato's "Pitch N Time", which is a Pro Tools Plug-In. The MPC doesn't really have the capacity to acurately timestretch without distorting., especially going from 95-80, or some real large gap. Another way would be to use a CDJ-1000 CD Turntable, or one of the other CD turntables that has Pitch Lock on it, to get your sample closer to the speed without changing the pitch, then sampling it to the MPC. That way, if you have to do a minimal timestretch it won't distort that noticeably. Basically you can't do it with the MP alone.

what is time compress v/s time stretching?

its mad confusing cuz like say its a program out there called audacity and on there they have change pitch, change tempo, change speed..

makes it all mad confusin so obviously i tried all 3... and well it didn't happen how i want it to happen..

this is what i'm tryin to do...

ex. i have a sample that is 2 bars at 121BMP.. I want to slow it down some maybe down to 90BPM... i tried the change tempo and its mad slow then but the sound is all off mad retarted makin the sample useless.. what am i doing wrong here? Or am i going about this the wrong way? using that page i even tried the calculator on change tempo by pitch shiftin but then its mad squeeky...

school me if you can specifically wit audacity since its free and it seem mad eazy to use..

the reason i'm tryin to slow down the sample is

1. it sound mad iller if it a little slower

2. it seems easier to do drums to it at the 80-90BPM timin..but maybe thats jus my weak a$$ not havin them skills...


oh yeah on the mpc 1k you can tune up or down, is that the same exact thing as PITCH shifting?

for the DJ cats can you do all this wit a dj turntable? is that another plus for getting one of the new turntables? i'm still rockin wit the og turntables jus your basic ish, only button on it is stop and 33/45 and CUE.. but i saw magazines some new turntables say pttch on em..what that about?
