I am a rookie to the game but very determined to make it happen. Just looking for advice on what is the best (and somewhat inexpensive) hardware and software to go with the 2000xl

I would go software because updates come out and you can update your software......hardware u cant really update........a nice computer with good processing power and a good sound card like at least the 2496 by audiophile..........as far as software goes check this link and have fun:
