Note Variation slider on the regular 2000

I understand how it works but is there a way you can control a sustained sample with the slider after you hit the sample pad 1 time?? I've tried doing this but it doesn't work. I'd have to keep pressing the sample simultaneously and move slider the to hear the slide effect.

I was told the MPC 2500 can do this but can the classic 2000 do the same?
