MPC 1000, midi cables, PC, Cool Edit Pro. What can I do?

I don't know very much about midi. I have a PC running Cool Edit pro. I am just wondering if I hooked up my 1000 to my PC via midi what types of things will this allow me to do? What type of functionality Am I looking at here? I'll worry about messing with midi set-up later. I just don't know what setting things up like this will do for me. I got a set of midi cables that have been sitting in a drawer even before I got my 1000. Oh, and I don't have other equipment. Any suggestions for use?

just learn how to use everything first before ou even start messing with midi....better to get the basics out of the way first than to burn yourself out trying to jump ahead......and with the setup you have...I wouldnt even worry about midi at all.....
