A Canadian scientist says teens who used to view CDs as superior to older vinyl records now consider vinyl superior to the newer format.



David Hayes of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto says the growing popularity of vinyl might be a form of resistance against the music industry's corporate taste-makers.

While conducting research for his Ph.D. dissertation, Hayes was surprised to discover the young music enthusiasts he was interviewing were fans of vinyl.

"This made me wonder why they were interested in something that is, for all intents and purposes, a dead medium," he said, noting the teenagers had switched from buying CDs to collecting LPs, often seeking obscure recordings.

Hayes research subjects said they liked the visual appeal of LP jackets and the challenge of seeking hard-to-find releases.

In yet another turnaround, teens overwhelmingly insisted the sound quality of LPs was superior to that of modern formats. They characterized LPs and the LP artists of the past as more authentic than the barrage of youth-oriented music being aggressively marketed to them today.

Hayes detailed his research in the February issue of Popular Music and Society.

YOOO acidsid i like that page it's about vinyl, but i cant watch none of the vids it' says for uk people only whats that all about i thought this is the world wide web?

no... it never went anywhere, it's just the people that got rid of there records and bought cd's (jumped on the banwagon) are starting to realize that it wasnt goin no where. and with this digital stuff causing deffness or loss of hearing they rather go back to vinyl again.

i just moved and payed a grib to get all 3000+ records of mine moved

i'm also cynical and pessimistic

i see all the stores closing or moving to smaller locations, its sad

I was thinking the same thing, 90% of the bands i see rock vinyl records and sell them at shows.

Yeah I grew up on it, and tapes of course. There might have been a vinyl lapse but I never dug CDs.

We have fireworks here last week its felt like Beirut round here; One of those kids set off some fukin mortar bomb that knocked my TV box onto a rare ebay purchase...dented the vinyl....but the fukker still plays. Lucky.

I was playing a record when a massive firework went off outside (You have July 4th Independence Day, we have November 5th when someone tried to blow up the houses of parliament with gunpowder years back) and the noise (somehow!) blew my cable-box off the TV onto the record making a big dent in it
