but anyhoo... when i first got the mpc 1000 i looked at these white faders and well

who would've thought that we would have full control of our samples?

even tho' if they did i would just be comfortable rocking 4.15...

You mean manipulating sampling start points with Q-Link? I thought they didn't include that feature yet. How does it work.. can you align it with the grid?

to get to this feature just go to the slider function and fiddle with it...






well as far as the grid goes i dont really use it but ill get back to you to see if it works

yea, I think the start point q-links is probably tied with direct record for my favorite add-ons from JJ.
Before this I use to use the velocity to change start time, but having it as a qLink is crazy nice (and leave velocity for things like volume)!
Sample ish with direct record add the sample to a program and chop it on the fly with the qLink!
Sampling a slow pitch bend from a synth or a slide whistle or whatever, and playing it while freaking the start time is wicked fun. Kinda feels like doing dj cuts or something. More fun then video games

so i just upgraded to 4.15 from 4.11 and I got the sliders workin on the sample but Im not seein how this is gonna change how i chop samples-
the sliders only effect the sample not the trim window so if i wanted to actually chop it up id still have to go into the trim window (do the qlinks work in trim mode?)-

the only use I see for this is for auditioning samples before going into the trim window, which to me is just another step that I dont need.

I must not be getting it....
am I missing something?

it's not a way for changin the way you chopping samples, it's more of an experimental effect for getting crazy sounds. very good for glitch, very good for other things. think of it as a transitional tool, your beat is having a changeup and you need a way of blending the before and after. put a sample on note repeat at 1/32 and hold it down while changing the start point...eeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh freaky

also, this is GREAT for creating a sustain. put a sample on note on, give it a little attack and a slow decay. now, record it at every 8th note or so and gradually change the start point. rather than having the sample start at the same point every time, you can have it start at different points which keeps the sample fresh and makes it not sound like it starts over again and again - instead, it gives you a sustain option w/in the sequencer.

yea, it's kinda a live non-destructive chop.
Like Antonym says, good for gitch and experimental stuff,
but still totally useful for bread and butter beat programming too.

So lets say you have a sample that 12 tones, with the slider at the bottom, the pad plays the first tone, and with the slider at the top it plays the last tone, no chopping nessesary, but you do have to release the pad at the desired end point. (this is with the sample set to note-on)

playing with the envelopes and Note repeat while playing the note start via the qLink is pretty great for gratuitous experimental funk.

I haven't played with it on looped samples yet, but I'm curious if the qLink start point will do anything with looped samples. hopefully

...but if you really want to just bang out the precise chops on the pads, you still gotta chop it up from the trim tool.

that's probably what the new slider/grid/global functions were created for. due to the fact that the pads are s***.
