Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

Ok guys I just wanted to let you know what I foundd out and how I am producing recently. Whatch this :

1. Alot of people think about getting an MPC 1000, 2500 or 4000 because of the editing capabilities like grid edit or something. In my opinion the only reason why I am using the MPC is the **** fresh TIMING of this mashine. When you make a beat with normal 16 th quantisation in regular DAWs the beat sound robotic. Thats why I always wanted that MPC magic.
2. The easy way to rearrange the midi data in grid edit for example is the same you can do in Reason, right ? Ok so why spend all that money just for some extra effects, Ram or Harddisk space when you all already work with a PC or mac ? So this is how I combine both MPC and Reason to get the best thing out :

1. I stick my midi keyboard to the MPC and the MPC into my Midi Soundcard ( Interface for you guys who have it ).
2. Now I dont use the Bus preferences with the 16 midi channels in reason.
I leave the track I am playing, at 1 A ( the Out of the MPC ). And that for all the Instruments i control through the MPC.
For example : I open Redrum, load up some samples and leave the little midi indicator piano sign ON next to the Redrum track. That means now I am triggering Redrum. The first thig i do now is not record it inside reason, but first I do my drumloop inside of the mpc to maintain the feel. As I am satisfied with the drums I do the following thing. YOU HAVE TO SYNC THE MPC WITH REASON VIA MIDI CLOCK. Go to Preferences and choose Midi Sync to Midi Clock. The same way inside your MPC, so the mashine sends the midi clock data.
Now the drum is layed down inside the MPC and I Enable the SYNC BUTTON inside Reason on the transport field. The loop has to be the same bars like in the mpc. Now press the record button in reason and Play START on the mpc. The Drums are gonna be recorded via Midi exacly how the mpc triggers the midi data. Be sure to uncheck the record button exactly when the loop ends, otherwise the midi data is gonna be recorded double time.
Ok the drums are inside reason, no I can do the Grid edit Thing inside Reason ( Velocity , Note length, etc whatever you want ).

Lets go to the next Instrument :

Now you crate a new device and open i.e. a piano.
You have to delete the midi data from Track one in the MPC from Track one, because you dont need it anymore. Its inside Reason now. Leave both Reason and MPC still synced so you can play the next device through channel 1A again, but still hear the drums at the correct timing.
Then you figure out what you are about to play and press the REC and PLAY START on the MPC. You record it and the drums & Piano are gonna ve exactly timing correct, because the MPC now just triggers the piano, and reason plays the drums from the redrum. You're satisfied with the piano ? Do the same thing again : Check the record button on reason and press PLAY START on the MPC. When you're finished you can now edit the midi data in such a detailed way you could never do in the MPC. It just takes too long.
Thats the way you do it with ALL the instruments you wanna play until you have your complete loop.

WHAT ABOUT THE ARRANGEMENT NOW ??
No Problem. Do the arrangement inside Reason. Chorus Verse Bridge etc.
If you wanna do some breaks or small changes now at specific points in youre arrangement you do as following :

Count the BARS of your arrangement in Reason. Lets Say its 58 Bars all together. Thats what you tell the MPC now. Put the Sequence to 58 BARS.
NOW YOU wanna change the drums at BAR 48 to do a Break for example.
Inside the MPC go to Bar 48. The cursor inside REason will do the same.
Lets say you wanna loop just Bar 48 and 49. Put both Left and Right markers of reason to Bar 48 and 49. Tell the MPC when you press OPEN WINDW on the loop field to loop from BAR 48 to Bar 49.
Delete the Snare for example or the base drum inside reason how YOU want it. Press Play and The MPC is going to just play the loop you marked. No play the drums for the break the way you like and record them into the MPC. Then as allways mark the record button in reason and record the drums of the MPC you just played.

Thats the way you GET the POWER of Both mashines :

1. The MPC TIMING AND FEEL

2. The Reason soundmodule and editing capabilities.

3. Now you dont have to save a song twice ( Reason and MPC )

Hope you got it and helped you out a bit.

As a mpc noob, I really appreciate you sharing your information in this format!
I have a question though. If you send the midi out of the keyboard to the midi in on the mpc, then midi out on the mpc to the midi in of the soundcard, can you use VST's on the computer? Or does the keyboard have to go directly into the souncard to be able to utlize vst's??

I just realized that you are using Reason. I prefer Cubase. I'm guessing the same midi setup and recording rules would apply to Cubase. Well maybe everything except the vst question.

you can use vsts with the mpc by running an instrument line(s) from the out(s) of your soundcard to the ins of the mpc. then make sure that your software is sending its output through the correct output. then go into the record screen of the mpc and press a key on your midi keyboard, you should see the monitor respond to the note. press record (f6 i think) and play on the mpc. the mp will not record until a sound reaches the threshold.

actually this is about a 2000xl. i have a 1k. but it should still be the same i would think. the midi routing way that you described sounds like to many steps. this way should give you the same effect.

No Problem with that. I did it with cubase Before, but Vst's suck too much CPU to get going.
An alternative to Cubase is for example V-Stack from Steinberg. Google it up for more info.
Its like Reason just for Vst's, with out the sequencer, so you save some CPU when using this Program. You can save the session as cpr. files, that are readable in cubase. Then u just fix the midi channels and thats it. The mixer and instruments will stay the same

I just bumped up to a dual core processor, so I am not having any cpu issues at all. No latency issues either!
Cubase is working absolutely perfectly for me.
By phlexter Wed Nov 22, 2006 3:24 pm
Then try to get both programs synced and you are ready to go with the same tecnique. I never made it to get MPC and Cubase absolutely synced like in reason. CPU is the other reason.
But in my opinion makin effects and workflow nothing gets above reason to me NOW.

I am sure down the road will end up getting a hold of Reason as well. There may be things that I will not be able to do in Cubase, that I can do in Reason.
Afterall, one can never have enough tools at his disposal!

Thats cool how you do it. What I do is just create everything inside the MPC, put it into song mode, convert it to a single midi file, then import it into reason, export as wav file. Mine maybe takes a lil longer, but you get the same effect as far as timing etc.... I try to deal with the reason sequencer as little as possible.

Thats ok. Thats the way everybody works, but what do you do when you wanna change the duration 10 notes and make some note changes. You have to edit everything in step edit. In reason its all infront of you , just like in the mpc 4000.

Could you lay that on me in layman's terms dog?

I was being serious. What do you mean by 'duration 10 notes' and 'step edit'?
By phlexter Fri Nov 24, 2006 2:18 pm
Do you have an MPC ? I guess so.
If you play some notes, then propably some wont be the exactly lenghth you desire. Except if you only use samples. VBut otherwise you wanna change the duration, and this is only possible inside the step edit page. ( on the main screen on the left bottom ).
Now if you have everything inside your sequencer you can edit the notes more easily without haveing to turn knobs and buttons all the time.

Gotcha.
Thanks for the info.
