anybody know where i can get some dope drum kits.

cuz the stuff on the internal hard drive aint that dope.

personally i think you should create your own with one shot samples or samples that you recorded off of vinyl, cd whatever your medium is. there are tons of good, free samples on the internet. also if you are looking to buy samples, i have read that this forum has some decent ones for purchase.

if you buy/download samples off the internet, recording off vinyl/cds/whatever you'll end sounding pretty like anyone else that does the same, if you take your time to learn how to create drums sounds with synths and process them to fatten them up you will A) sound original and B) be proud of yourself becasue everything is made by you.[/list]

and C) you'll be feeling dumb because you'll just have wasted hours to get a basic kick and a snare


Seriously man i hope you're joking with that kick from synth, because :

A) it is not possible to get an organic sound that way, and plastic drums really really sound uckfed up (excpet in some rare cases)!

B) It is not with a home made kick and snare that you're going to sound more original or anything

C) with the load of samples that exist, you'll find it very difficult to use the same drumkit as someone else



if you're willing to spend money there are a lot of websites where you can purschase good drums (*************************)
If not, just open a p2p software and look for drumkits, or hiphop drums, or whatever. Darkside productions has recently posted some good drums on this forum if i remember correctly. Nym has also uploaded lots of drumkits (ask him for the link i don't remember it)

However i doubt that anybody is going to hand you his personal drumkits, because it's very... personal!

But for real, it's better if you make your kits yourself, not the drumsounds themselves, only arrange your kits your way

90% of ready made kits are waste of money, 99% waste of time scrolling through useless rubbish.
Regarding wasting time making your own, unless you are non musician and untalented it is definitely not a waste of time. With that kind of understanding and attitude you dont have long way to go, you didnt even start to get ready to go.

even if you're making your own kits with a waveform in sound forge you're still sampling a sine wav, triangle, whatever...

most premade kits are TOTALLY garbage and i definitely do not suggest using them.

i think sampling from breaks and layering from there yields the best sounding drum kit there is

i've got to agree with antonym on this one

sampling breaks is really good because you often get a partcular sound that you will never be able to get with synths, even if you're called minimal

i like to switch from breaks to normal drumkits
it depends on the type of song i'm making

some people like to experiment and try to innovate
some others are OK with pre-made stuff

at the end everything is OK if you're happy with what you do that's the most important thing, being happy, isn't it?

nothing wrong with a synth made drum to embellish certain frequency in hip hop drums, or synth made drums standing alone in electronica music (not just techno, there's a LOT of brilliant electronica out there).

and while you can't make it sound per se like a "real drum" you're often not trying to at all.

using synth drums in hip hop alone however is something i have not yet learned to love, i suppose, because often you end up with something too clean for the genre. that's why i distrust any premade kit NOT from vinyl, as well.

however, homemade embellishments of accoustic drum samples is really nice. triangle wavs over hi hats? **** yeah.

edit - i'm fairly sure that the drums from that tom york single "ufcked up" are either live recording or vinyl skins over heavily synthesized drum frequencies. the result was beautiful. the kick and the snare sound so good together.

yes that explains a lot, we're used to see hiphop heads on these forums so i assumed you was talking about drums for hip hop/trip hop...
in this case i understand you always synthesize your own drums
