shooting a dvd while making the album?

Hey all,

i have a question for you all.

so my and my crew are going to be hitting the studio to make an album for the label to get our name out. now i have the quotes for the CD pressing all sealed and ready for the street, wether it be threw the stores localy, off the website, or out of the trunk of my car.

my roomate is taking a digital design course at the same school im taking my audio engineering course. one of the courses she is taking is on making video, for web, DVD TV whatever right. her instructior is the editor for a TV show shot up here you might now: The TrailerPark Boys.

She lives with me and loves creating things, and is taking a course in video production. She also loves hanging out with me in the studio, DJ gigs and going to our shows.

So the thought is this: what do you guys think about having her shoot video of us making the record, us at our shows, interveiws and all that with us while making the album? i know it would be cool and she is down for it.

Do you think it would be more something for the website or do you think people who where our fans and bought the album would also buy the DVD? or like make a package deal in the stores along with the webite with the album, a t-shirt, and the DVD for a resonable price, and the option to buy it seperatly?

give me your input, i read threw this whole section today and sen nothing like this, so your answers will help me and maybe spaark others interest at the same time.

If it's in the budget, go for it. It could increase your exposure both musically and visually.

well it could be included in the advert budget a little i guess. there really isnt a soild budget, im planning on the cost of pressing and packing 1000 Cd's, making promo posters for the stores, and paying my street team.
along with that, ill need to have money set aside of expenses i didnt forsee, and the expense of haveing more Cd's pressed before the cash comes in from the rest you feel me.

shirts arent much to print up her for 1-2 colors, and the dvds pressed and cased up are like 200$ per 1000 to press.

now i wouldnt press 1000DVD's or anything, more like 300-500, a limited edition thing you feel me.

i think both the dvd and shirts would be another good way to get our name out around here, since no one else is ddoing that. everyone just plays shows and puts out crap quality burnt Cd's.

dont get me wrong, i have put out lots of burnt mix tapes, but we want a more eye catching then everyone else.

anyone else? anyone have any links or anything they can throw out.

well i dont have the budget, but i could if i wanted ya know.

it would be a limited pressing of the DVD's anyways.

i just thought it would be a nice alternative, buy the CD, a t-shirt, and a DVD al in a package would be cool.

it wont cost me a dime to make the footage, my roomate will shoot it for me, since she is around all the time anyways. only cost is pressing it.

i can edit the footage as can she with final cut studio, and im designing the covers myself.

I would make a lot of shirts (maybe some hats too) and give them away for free. (Free Promotion). The DVD I would stick to selling at your shows where a more loyal fan base would be to buy them. I would stick posters up and give away the hats and shirts weeks before the release to build anticipation for the album. Also I would include the release date on the shirts. Just a few thoughts, hope it helps, peace.

My only question would be: How big are you? I mean why limit yourself to where these are going to be available? If you get the DVD's pressed up, dont get caught up in this T-Shirt - CD- DVD package. Just have all this stuff readily available and on you at all times. I'm not sure how Canada works but i'd be surprised if you find stores that are going to want to not only stock 3 of your items, but deal with the issues that go along with this type of special promo. I 100% agree with NiceWeis914. Hustle.

Trailor Park Boys is **** funny - I drove to Vancouver BC from Seattle to watch the movie..I love Canada - The beer - the Women - and what do you know about the Beaver Buzz....I need to get a case of that shit!

It's a good idea, but to be serious (because I'm going through the same issues right now) unless your price for everything is super, and I mean SUPER cheap, no one is going to want to pay for it. What I eman by this is, lets say you sell everything for $20 (which is a super low price for that whole package) most people don't like to spend $13 on a cd that they KNOW they will like. Even when you can get them for $11.99 on the first Tuesday when it's released (Best buy, circuit city prices) they still support the bootlegger's $5 a cd price. For $20, they can get 4 cd's, and even the bootlegger is getting a raw deal nowadays with limewire allowing people to download songs for free and Microsoft "zunes" letting people share their music (I'm quite sure someone is oging to crack that 3 days to share limitation).
If I were you, I would sell everything seperate. You can still get $20 (probably more) for the whole package, but don't call it a "package" If the cd is 7 bux, I think it will sell. If you sell em for $10 on the net but include free shipping, your still getting your $7. If the cd is dope, they may come back for the t-shirts or the dvd, but remember, the material on the cd means nothing, it's the character behind the music that people want to know. 5o cent can come out with a balnk cd today and he will sell more copies then all of our best beats combined ever will. Do some shows, get some exposure around your city, on the internet, make small video's and post them.. YouTube, Myspace, anywhere that's free. Technology now makes gaining exposure easy and cheap. Someone in Bangladesh can see your video 2 minutes after you post it. They can have your cd in their hand (payed and burned) minutes after they download it, so don't skip any steps. Your 1000 cd/dvd's/t-shirts will be collecting dust if you don't do things right.

Since you are both going to school I would assume they have the facilities there. is there someway you can do it as some sort of class project? why would spend a $G when you have access to eveertything you need at your fingertips? you should look into working a deal with the school, maybe somehow give them some sort of promotional credit. or better yet, let them use you as an example of what can be done at the school. it's worth a shot. good luck. one

jes i thought this was a dead thread, but i guess not.

well i was thinking about taking the film we would use for the DVD and release some of the episodes onto youtube and myspace. Then maybe press them up for sale, or just release the rest when the ablum drops.

Yes, we do have the facilitys at the school to do the editing and all the post production, its not an issue. i have 24/7 access to the school for anything i want.

The album is in planning stages right now, getting the beats together and getting the rappers writeing. The studio we are using for the bed tracks and pre production is actualy in the school. Then we are going to move it to the studio we do all our practical work in for school (thesonictemple.ca). we have access to that studio whenever we want as long as paying sessions arent booked.

Some of the schools event and talent managment kids are going to help do the promo and organize the shows. Some of graphic designers (includeing me roommate) are going to do the posters and CD covers. And the 3D animators are going to do the video for us. All this under the guidence of yours truely and some of my crew. they are all doing this on the side away from school on thier own time, all for their portfolios and demo reels.

So yes its a huge project for me, and everyone involved. But we are all doing it for fun, none of them stand to get paid from this. Only me, the other producers, and the artists (musical) stand to make anything.

Now i stand to make more then everyone else because im risking the loss, im putting up the cash. We are having the head of the talent managment department negotiate the contract dealings reguarding publishing and points.

Also, might as well tell you guys, im working on doing some shirts with the MPC theme, t-shirts...hoodies...maybe some hats too.

definitely let her film it - whether or not you can afford to package it... and then whether or not anyone will buy it... i definitely hope so, i think it's a wicked idea.

but even if the budget doesn't look strong enough, definitely film it, there'll be some gold moments in there, and if worst comes to worst, at least you can watch em when you're all granpa n shyt and get a little tear in yr eye think of the good old days.
