Anybody experienced after restarting the mpc that the contrast of the display gets much darker or lighter?

not yet buddy. i am still at my folks' house. they used to be hippies, now they're like...supercultured people who are "proud of getting by." they aren't supportive of my interest in tokin, although they both admit to having smoked in the last 5 years. newsflash - take acid, your kids might end up like me...don't take acid!
anyway, i was running cuz i was about to get some coffee before, but it sounds like your lcd screen is warming up with use. i usually have to adjust mine as my mpc warms up, esp if i come walking from outside where it's cold.
