Changing the sounds of instruments

ok, this question has been on my mind forever now...Madlib is a musical genius, the melodies he samples and loops up, START as maybe a horn melody, or strings..but he adds some crazy effect to the melody that can completely shift the sound of the instrument, to where it sounds nothing like the original instrument, only the same melody. like i said in the other post, for a song off madvillain, the original sample is played by harmonica, and on the album he freaked it to sound like a crazy rhoades piano. in countless other madlib beats, the original melody is played in jazz horns, only to sound exactly like a flute after hes done tweaking it... if anyone knows how to do this, PLEASE help, its buggin the shit outta me!! i haven't heard what you talk about, but I guess one way of doing what you describe is to take out the part and rerecording a MIDI sequence into your sequencer, then play back two synth/sampler patches at the same time using that MIDI sequence and crossfade between them.

Did that make any sense?

well, you may be able to flip a horn into a rhodes sound with your freq and res filters in your params screen and your volumes on your mixer.

did you ever hear his yesterdays new quintet album?
he actually USED a rhodes and some other keyboards as well.
i know he rocks an sp1200, which has some mean filters on there, as pete rock has showed us.
he is a crazy digger too. maybe he got like a cover song of the og one where they use a different instrument. madlib is insane.

Nope, the secret is the sp303. wicked realtime effects. I've seen it done.

The filters on the SP 1200 aren't all that, only 2 adjustable and no resonance.

hmmmm. well i know that he definately uses a rhodes but that sp303 is interesting.

its only about 300 bucks, is there any way that you could link that through the mpc?

like say record player to sp303 to mpc2000xl?

some synth units have an audio in patch, where you can rout a signal, and then process that sound within the synth unit using its filters.

of course man, you can hook up that shit.

But no way too hook up Madlib's genius to your MP without him in the room

well, ive elaborated a full proof plan to kidnap madlib and the only thing that i need now is to know how to hook that 303 up so thats not an issue.

how would you set that up between the three?

Lots of people use it as an effects unit, Record player -> Audio in -> audio out -> MPC

last interview I saw of madlib, he mentions he's now using the mpc4000 up in the bombshelter. I can't wait to see what he can do with it.

Pitch shifter? I think what you are talking about can be done on a pitch shifter if used in conjunction with the mpc's filters and pitch adjustment. perhaps thats the effect on the 303 madlib uses...

well thats strange, i knew madlib uses the sp303, but on the madvillain album hes holding an SP-1200...so i guess the filters on the 1200 can do the same thing
