nice snares

I have been sampling some funk but I find the snares aggressive any tips where to get a nice snare that dont clang, I have been down the road of getting all the ultimate breaks and beats but the snares are all dirty and im looking for a snappy snare rather than clang..

any tips?

stay away from comps and get the OG,try different kinds of music theres some jazz you can chop the thesnare out of.

on some records theres songs that start with a drum roll...take that and chop it up you get a realy nice drum kit fromt hat

Try some softer soul music. I think you will find what you're looking for there.

For nice snares check out some reggae/dub. Most of them start with a snare roll, and are easy to chop.

Otherwise, don't disregard early electronic music, alot of the old machines had the sound you're looking for.

I sampled some run DMC last night that was interesting I think they use 808s

old school reggae and dub indeed - lots of old school funk too, but one note on the reggae/dub stuff - some of those drummers play on piccolo snares - so they are tight/punchy - buuut - that's if u want to go that high-pitched... if anything, maybe u can mess with the pitch later... but the man is right on - lots of intros with snares and lots of breakbeat stuff has fresh, warm snares that can be chopped out and cleaned up...

not sure what type of funk you are sampling right now - if it's that real, old school - grimey, loose funk - like james brown type'a stuff - just really gritty stuff... orrrr if it's the electric funk - the stuff p-funk and bootsy and ohio players and zapp and roger did - that stuff has really tight, really punchy snares... granted a lot of the sounds were real live drummers, some of those drummers played on snares/toms/etc that were "triggered" electronically - so two sounds came out when playing that head... so they got the acoustic sound of their real snare, and maybe a thick roland snare in the background.....

check a lot of dennis chambers' old videos/tutorials/cd's for great snare sounds... chick corea stuff too when he played with the full band... dave weckyl... etc.

part of them - maybe just 1/10 of them -

they're a big circus - both on stage, and in the studio... hence the "all-stars" part... george clinton and (sometimes) bernie worrell are the only two original members of p-funk that play with the all-stars... sometimes they have guest appearances by bootsy and so on... but overall - it's a whole different band - as the original parliament funkadelic (p-funk) members went on to do their own things / solo projects / studio musician work...

but yeah, they are still playing the same "type" of funk, for the most part at least, though the original p-funk was a different breed, due to the moment and the time and what they represented with all that was going on in the world....

went to a p-funk all stars show recently at the vault 350 in long beach, and it was a great show - but the players were all new *to me* -

and george clinton only came out for like 15 minutes at the end of the show to sing a song... kinda disheartening...

but yeah, the original p-funk -

a great snare to sample - tight and punchy is the intro to their original "we want the funk" intro - i forget the actual name of the song... but of course it was one of their big hits - "weeeeeeee want the funk / gotta have that funk" -

the song starts off with an amazing snare roll........ sample it.

chocolate city is fresh too, and for intro, check the original "bop gun" - with the guitars and kick drum going...
