Akai MPC60 MIDI out

Hi! First post here. I just bought an Akai MPC60. It comes with a big manual, but i was wondering if the 16 pads on the mpc60 sends MIDI data out? Note on/ off and velocity sensitivity, so i can trigger a sampler with it.

YEs, it does. It is great for external samplers.

Yes it makes some noise, if you get a high pitched whine there is little you can do. I have a fix for it, but it is rather technical and easy to mess things up if you don't know what you are doing.

If you can live with it, do so, if not, I can make it softer, sometimes eliminate it, but you'd have to send the small inverter board to me so I can do the fix.

Oh and it would cost you about $50.

I posted how to do so on this forum, do a search for high pitched whine, I'd rather people do it themselvs if they can, but If I am to do it, I need to justify the time.

OH, and if you don't have the OS upgrade (OS 3.10) then get it. It is pricey but it is soooo worth it. Also the Marion SCSI upgrade and a zip 100 drive makes things so much easier.

Im about to dig into the manual! Im running OS 2.12 at the moment, but will be upgrading to 3.10 en the Marion scsi update very soon.

So.., the whining is normal.. Is this a sign that my unit will be broke soon?

I don't think the whining will cause any damage.

I have found that it is basically the sheilding coil on the AC inverter transformer that gets loose and doesn't do it's job very well.

It is more irritating than harmful.

If it gets to you, PM me and we can talk about getting it fixed.

It requires you talking out a small board (2 inches x 3 inches) and mailing it to me unless you are in NYC, I do it as soon as I get it and put it in the mail the next day. You can't use your MPC while the board is out, so I am quick at returning it.

Just to make sure, the sound is high pitched and if you put your ear near the play/stop/record buttons that is where it comes from (that's where the board is).

money back if it doesn't reduce the volume of the whine considerably.

I've done this on a few MPC's including my own and it hasn't needed any help since. Mine is silent!!!!!

If anyone else wants it done rather than replacing the inverter, give me a hollar and we can talk.

I'm not looking to make mad loot doing this, just to hook up 60 heads who are annoyed at this. I do need to justify my time tho...

Check if you have the SCSI option installed already, some 2.12 machines came with SCSI IIRC.

Im thinking of repairing it myself.. maybe you could help me out by giving me a link on how to fix the whining (wich is driving me nuts). Ive searched this forum, but could nt find any answers.

How can I check if my mpc has SCSI installed? ( os v2.12 )

Then one more thing.. Is there any way to put more than 1500 k of memory in the MPC60? Isnt there some trick?!

I can give you tips and help as you go along. I prefer you to do it yourself, but I hope you know how to desolder and solder, otherwise it can be tricky.

Isnt there some kind of website that explaines what I should do? I can solder cables and stuff and I have the equipment to do it. I am circuit bending a Casio SK-1 at the moment.

Can you elaborate on this a little bit? I'm trying to trigger as ASR X and a Proteus module with the pads on my 60II. I have no problems playing thru the 60II to the external gear using an external midi controller. However, I can't get the pads on the 60II to trigger any external gear. I've tried all of the logical settings that I can think of, but nothing is working. I am using OS 2.14 if that helps anyone answer my question.

I used to have a 2000xl and I had no problem doing this.
