Does anyone have any tops/tricks on getting around the dependance of pitchshift/timestretching? Preferable something not to specific for the MPC...

I've started to use the shifting and streching alot but it makes my samples sound crappy when done too extremely.

Check lampdogs useful links for the mpc addict there is a place called deepsound in his links that is really good for figuring out timestretch, picthshift and other sample related issues......you may even want to pm lamp and ask him a few questions......or do a search. :D

I wrote this one on a tips forum years ago.. but thought i'd throw it in again.

On the 2000XL .. i sample some really long riffs.. i.e. i play my guitar or keys and record a 4 or 8 bar loop in PT and then put that into my MPC.

When you have a loop that long in your song.. if u stop your song before the sample has finished..the long loops keep playing. To stop them playing i just go into the *trim* screen and back out again and it stops the sample.

I know i could just record (in the MPC) the sample down set as *note off* but i use my sampler in a live band where i trigger long feedback loops and stuff while i play keys over the top.. so i need the sample to play out by itself.

(When the band is practising if we stop in the middle of the song - its a handy way of killing the sample so it doesnt play on and on).

Not much of a tip or trick.. just something i once worked out.

on the jenius os you can make it so all samples stop immediately on a single stop tap

or you can hit the next bar button

Thanks for the tip, but it's not really another method so to speak. There must be a way of manually timestreching?

Get yourself a Boss SP-505 (or an SP-303, although the 505 is a bit more flexible). Nowadays these come dead cheap on Ebay. They're great companions to the MPC, with a nice gritty sound. The effects are not the greatest, but can actually make for some nice lo-fi flavor that I personally like a lot.

Another lo-fi trick: record stuff with a dead-ordinary cassette player. Then record to the MPC and start chopping away. I especially like to record my tv that way while zapping , which makes for a nice collection of samples.

here's a simple, but kinda cool trick -

when you want a sample to play out longer than the sample would actually play for.. have it set to one shot, and make it a mono sample.. (i only know how to do it on the 1k.. so for other mpcs maybe just assign it to its own mute group? so it mutes itself when you hit the pad again) .. so yeah, if you want the sample to play longer, like a vocal stab or one long string note, but you want it to go on for longer than the actual sample. go into 16 levels, and then attack... and just play around wtih that.. if you fool around with hitting the pads you can figure out a way to make the sample sustain longer. hard to explain, but it works, trust me.

yeah bro.. attack

unless you want the sample to get quieter.. give it a shot.. fool around with it for a min and you'll be able to figure it out
