greatest horn samples -

starting this thread in hopes to get great horn samples in the hands of folks who need them / have been thinking of getting more brass into their routines...

so everyone add your two cents...

not only are these two bands that we should all be familiar with, buuuuut their horn sections (especially T.O.P.'s) are NOTORIOUS for being sooooo gatdamn tight and punchy and quick with the hits........ amazing.

curtis mayfield is amazing too - his band i mean - but kanye ripped that mean ass horn sample from him for his "touch the sky" song.. yeah those horns were his - amazing grab....

and that's what's up.... as far as tower of power - they are gonna be in so. cal again in the next few months too at the galaxy theater, so if anyone's rollin' - take a DAT!

on a side note, grab some jaco pastorius (read bio http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaco_Pastorius) for some amazing bass work... lots of samples can be grabbed from him - he always solos, and his work was not traditional....

Man, don't think for a second that Kanye has snapped up all the good Curtis gear. In fact he grabbed his most obvious track, so there's still plenty left for the pickings.

Anything that Fred Wesley has been involved with will be gold, and Chuck Mangione as e.d.e mentioned.
Don't overlook old big band stuff like glenn miller, benny goodman, and the dorsey brothers either. Library records also often have good horns, and for solo horns, rather than stabs you can't touch jazz.

JUSS a Correction, but Kanye mighta ripped the Touch the Sky sample-Lyrically, But Musically-It was JUST BLAZE(check him in the DEC/Jan 05 SCRATCH-he sed he sampled it from the internet ). Peep the albums Liner notes.... HORNS, u w ant sum Horns Kool and the Gang(Pre James JT Taylor-singy songy Kool & The Gang). For a Sample(get it), of what a Kool and the Gang Horn Sample can do- Heres an Innocuous usage and a Blatant(but downrightFUNKY)usage...Check Pete Rock&Cl Smooth"Straighten it Out" theyre 1st heard after the drum intro)-thats K&TG "chocolate buttermilk" its taken out of context- in typical PR style. The 2nd is Nas' "It aint Hard to Tell"( K&TG's "NT"). Them are some tight Horns.....

it might have been a sample from the net, and by just blaze; however, those are curtis mayfield's horns that were sampled, and originally played wayyyyyyyyyyy back in the day....

lot of mayfield funk fans were annoyed... don't believe everything you read in liner notes or interviews, you can google it, just type in:

kanye west, curtis mayfield, move on up, sample

or something like that... or pick up the original record.
i love kanye and all his flare and his beats, but remember, it's the same guy that didn't pay for (or get clearance for) the "diamonds are forever" sample that broke... i don't blame him, nor do i hate on him - i love the sampling - it's the heart of hiphop beats and culture... the mix... but yeah, it's mayfield
