I've downloaded a bunch of samples from Hollow Sun and want to use them with Logic's EXS-24 sampler. The sample sets are in Akai S5/6000 format, but the EXS 'convert from Akai' option won't do anything without an Akai format CD.

that I tried burning the samples to a CD and converting from that, but it didn't show up when I selected the 'Convert from Akai' option either.

Anything else I can try?

CDXTRACT 4 can do this....i think. I'm sure you can download a demo somewhere to give it a try.

You shouldn't need to convert from akai format. That's only useful for machines of the S3000 series and earlier.

The S5K/6K (and the Z series, MPC2kXL and later) all use wav and aiff files, so there should be no conversion necessary. EXS should have a standard import wav type function. That's all it is. The akp file is just an organizational layout that tells the sampler how to setup the keyboard and how to freak the individual samples, how to layer, etc.

And that's what I want...I DL'd sample sets for 95 instrument and don't want to have to remap all of them. The EXS has a conversion tool that creates .exs files from .akp files but it doesn't seem to want to do it unless you are using a sample CD. All my existing EXS samples are AIFF, so a batch conversion of the audio wouldn't be too bad either (just to stick to one format).

I tried both CDxtract and ChickenSys Translator, and while both look like good apps the demo versions are too limited. I don't anticipate needing to convert enough Akai sample sets to warrant paying out $130+ for either of these so I was hoping someone might know a workaround in Logic.

You got a point there. That's a lot of money for one set of samples. If you mail me an akp with some samples, i'll see if i can do it for ya. I promise i won't steal your samples.

Thanks...I'll send you one of the smaller sets when I get in from work tonight.

Okay - afte some trial and error I found that the demo of CD extract would do conversion one program at a time if I put them in separate folders. It took a while, but everthing seems to be working now. I recommend the moog basses, BTW. Big fat slabs of noise...

Glad to hear that worked.

And hell yeah, Steve's got some kickass sounds on HS!! Used to download them in bulk to my portable HD at work when I still had a job.
