Does your turntable have a pitch control on it, if so, do you know how to use it?

Say you want to make a track at 100BPM. You set the MPC to 100 BPM and "pretend" that you are recording a sequence. The MPC's built in "click" track will act like a metronome that you can then match the BPM on the record to. Basically, use the pitch control on the turntable to match the tempo on the record to the tempo the MPC is playing back at. Once you have the tempos matched, you can then sample directly in to the MPC and if you trim the samples in to 1 or 2 measure chunks, the beats should match up well enough to sound ok. Adjust the playback tempo on the MPC until they match perfectly, you should only be a few BPM off if you have done it correctly.

If this makes no sense to you, you probably need to get something that can timestretch.

now that you explain, it does make sense

basicly i gotta manipulate it by means of time and pitch to make the sample the right length as if i did use a timestretch method. it's just the manual way of doing it. i could get the hang of it. iu just hope it doesn't mess around with the sound too too much

you can also just sample the loop, trim it so it's the right length, then mess with the pitch until it loops smoothly every 1 or 2 bars (when it retriggers).

if you're running out of sample space you can actually sample the loop off the turntable running really fast (i.e. 45 @ +8), and then lower the pitch in the sampler. you use up less sample time and get a nice (sometimes) grunge when you lower the pitch back down until it loops right.

damn I never thought of that before... Ill make a basic 4/4 kick snare pattern and then just beatmatch the record if I dont know the bpm of the record I wanna chop up... GOOD ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you think there is 3000?
By Troma Wed Mar 10, 2004 10:06 pm
Unless there is more somewhere I would estimate that at less than 1000 records give or take. Last time I moved I had about 40 boxes like those and I estimate my collection at somewhere around 2500 maybe.

You have a VERY nice stack of wax though, I am sure there is a vast amount of sample material for you there. Grats on the find! I dream of finding deals like that.

*edit* Each box appears to hold about 60 records or so X maybe 20 boxes? You probably have just under 1500...

I would be interested in knowing once you get em all sorted.

close troma... but
each box holds about 75 records,

3 boxes aren't in view, and i gave about 2 boxes away already. give or take half a box.

By one-up Thu Mar 11, 2004 12:37 am
so i think that 25 boxes, plus 2 stacks at least 150-200 high times 75 each box...

i think im am around 2000, at least. but then i have like 300 45's and about another hundred 75's...

any good? I have been scrounging for good beats on 45's lately. Tons of cuts from the 60's and 70's that never got LP versions made. Good stuff...

I'll just have to count my wax some day and see what I have. When I was getting a divorce a few years ago, I stored my wax at my house while I moved out. If we would get in a fight, my ex would go down in the basement and smash records until she felt better. She would not say how many she broke exactly but she estimated several hundred... Makes me sick to think about it. She could have at least saved the sleeves so that I knew which ones I needed to replace... the only way I know now is if I think of a song I want to hear and dig for 2 hours through the stacks and come up empty.
