Ok.. saying I had a 4 bar loop.. but I only wanted to hear the 1st and 3rd bars as played. Is there any way to silence the sample for the 2nd bar ready to be bought back in for the 3rd? Im guessing you can do it by assigning the sample to an output and externally muting it on a mixer but I was wondering if there was a way you can do it internally. Perhaps like sequencing the internal mixer.. be great if you could control velocity of the channels on the internal mixer with a Q-link slider but i doubt thas possible ;)

no biggie if not. just a thought!

I was looking to do something similar to this. I think we're both looking to ultimately achieve the same thing - muting certain sounds on the fly. I couldn't find a way to record/overdub mutes for certain pads/mixer channels. Yes, I want to do basically what you described with an external mixer but I want to do it all in the MPC1000. If anyone has the solution, give a shout. TerroristProphecy, if we're not talking about the same thing, feel free to yell at me and I'll "get out your way." :)

lol.. nope.. u got it.. and same here with everything on the mpc1000.. always find its best to use one piece of kit if possible.. cheaper too! lol

and to add to it. ive seen the attack and decay threads about using 16 levels to chop but thats not really what i meant..

Don't know if you're into external MIDI controllers. You might look at mpc2000xl.com. There's some tips about using sysex messeges to control the mpc's mixer...you might be able to "mute" your track through that...though it'd be just like note repeat...only done when recording.

Too bad you can't record track mute.

Completely understood m8. I've tried to simplify my studio quite a bit in the recent past. I went from the following:

MPC3000, SP1200, Mackie 32*8 mixer, bunch of outboard gear, TTs, nord lead2, motif 6, ASR-10, mics, etc

down to:

Turntable into MPC1000 into PC.

I've wasted so much time in the past with extra pieces of kit that I would get lost in playing with all the toys quite often. I worked my best when it was just me and shelves of records and the MPC. So that's what I'm back to. It's been working for me for the majority of 15 years, no sense changing the tested recipe.

So back to our original need, I'll play around a bit more with this tonight and see if I can find a workaround or some such.

Laters,

Cut your loop into 4 pieces and assign each bar to another pad. Record each pad to another track. Use track mute to control the mutes.
Or: record those 4 pads to the same track and use the q-sliders with volume to silence the measures you want.

Good solution possibly for someone but the mutes I would "perform" may be for less than a measure. And I'm definately not cranking my bpm up 3x to get a higher measure resolution. Thanks though.

one possible solution could be this:

record a very short silent sample (the length of 1 sample should do) and assign it to the same mute group as the 4-bar sample you want to silence. voilá, you have a "note-off" pad on your mpc! this could be also applied to work automatically by recording note-off pad hits on a track. then by muting/unmuting the track you could have precise control over the mute - i.e. not having to worry hitting the note-off pad right on time.

probably badly explained, bear with me. also, i haven't tested this, but i can't think of a reason why this wouldn't work.

One thing about the MPC is that it forces you to make-do with what you have. I found that inspiring. In my software days, I was very lazy when it came to processing samples. Now I'm pushing the MPC and the samples much more, despite the fact that I have limited options. (And if I run into a dead end, I can always export the sample to the editing program of my choice for more options). great machine.

I think that's probably the best solution yet kluster. I'll give it a shot next time the need arises.

I wish something like this would work:

You put the MPC mixer into Mute mode, this makes each of the pads mute its assigned sample when hit. Seems simple doesn't it? Time to write a new OS.

Looks like another small but very useful tweak the 1000 could do with.

As for the suggestions... agreed with k00k on them.. the 'note off' pad idea sounds great theoretically.. have to give it a try..

cheers people!

I think this is what Im after...

Anything similar on the 1000?

Nope...no sample slicing on the 1k :x

By tiger vomitt Thu Mar 11, 2004 8:12 am
no slicing, but there is that "extract" thing. it's a lot slower than a computer doing the same thing, but useful if you dont wanna leave the mpc

ive used it a bunch, works fine

good point.. I was put off by the time it takes.. but i guess its not too bad.. guess i should stop being lazy! lol no harm in lookin for a quicker way though ;)

Thanks!
