Those Remixes

Yo, you know how they got all those black album remixes? How do they do it? Cuz ma brotha wants me to take this song he's got, and put a beat behind it... He said his boy sampled it into his MPC and did it. but i'm thinkin like damn, a 4 minute sample? What the hell did he save that on? So i'm figuring that's not the answer.... anyway, i have a Digi 001, MPC2000xl, and a Motif.... what should i do to do the remix? My first thought was to load the song in pro tools, and use the MPC as the master and keep it midied so when i hit record then play, the Digi would start playing to, but then the song already has a formatted beat, he just kinda wanted me 2 add some on top of the beat.... what should i do? Help me out here!

I'm confused... are you just puttin your bro's a capella over your own beat or what...

If your doing that (assuming you know the original songs tempo) all you have to do is construct a beat on the MPC, record it into Pro Tools, and lay the vocals on top of it....

If your just adding something to the original beat... Like adding your own little bassline or synth part on top of it... Then you either got bounce back and forth between the MPC and Pro Tools or (the better way to do this) get a hold of the original sequence... Get a hold of the original studio tracks or MPC .pgm file that your brother's boy made the beat with... Then you can just add shit on top of it right on the MPC....

Nah, maybe i wasn't clear, ma bad it was early in the mornin and i was tired...

He's got this song, he did it over some industry beat, like a tupac beat or somethin.... He wants me to take that whole song, with vocals and the beat and everything, and add something to it, like some bongos or some kind of sound effects and stuff like that....

His boy had made him a different track about a week ago.... by doing the same thing. So I asked him how he did it... and he said he took his whole song and sampled it into the MPC and the added on it that way.... That didn't seem too logical, so i figured it was a better way..

Thats why i'm on here, trying to find what that better way is...

I would lay the beat and the vocals on seperate track on Pro Tools (if you have the vocals seperate)... Then I'd sample a loop of the beat into the MPC... That way when you add the little bongo section, or whatever, it stays in time with the original beat... I'd then record the beat from my MPC (minus the looped instrumental) and lay it on a seperate track... I'd arrange it all in Pro Tools and then master everything in there... This is just my approach... I'm sure there are other ways that people do this so if you don't like my method just wait till someone else adds their two cents... iight... oNe.
