What does an expander do?

Okay, I'm here reading the manual for the Waves C1 gate (does anyone else notice that it's written in ancient Egyptian sanscrit??) and it says that the gate can function as an expander.

So, what does an expander do and what are its uses?

an expander is like a reverse compressor....its for whehn you want to make things quiter in the mix below a certain threshold...
