500 vs 1000 which to buy

Any advice from 500/1000 owners... I have a 2000xl but need to get something more portable. Will sell my xl for a 500 or 1000. Appreciate any thoughts... peace

I personally choose the 1000 over the 500 because of the bigger screen and a whole host of other additional features. The only benefit I saw in owning a 500 was battery power and a better designed pad assembly. So I guess you'll just have to compare the two based on physical features as well as specs. Better yet, try them out at a local music store if you can. If access to them is a problem, try downloading the manual on each to see which one appeals better to you.


I can point this out though. If you go with the MPC 500, you can forget about installing an internal hard drive, having waveform sample editing (you'll be looking at numbers instead), as well as having the wonderful features of the 2500 through JJ's OS. On the other hand, if you go with the MPC 1000, you can forget about taking it to the park, being able to easily grab it with one hand, and you may possibly experience problems in the future with the pads. Although many people complaint about the pads in the 1k, I haven't had any problems with them so far and this is my 2nd MPC 1k (a black one).

I have both...and the 1000 is the better machine as long as you don't want the battery capabilities. The 500 is really just a 1000 with less features.

Thanks to both of you. Yeah... I have seen the 500 at a GC but it wasn't funtioning. The pads are nice in that they are a single sheet. Do you notice any difference in the black 1000's pads as opposed to the blue model? I haven't seen the black version in person. Does the JJ OS improve on the black 1000 OS as well? Not too familiar with the JJ OS but I see it's all over these forums. Again... much respect to you both. peace

I use the blue 1000...and have tried the black 1000...I can't tell the difference in pads.

JJ's OS will work on any 1000 whether it be black or blue. I also had a blue 1000 before I got my black one and I must say the pads feel the same. As far as I can tell, there's no difference. Same exact machine, just different color.

isn't the black 1000 considered version 2? i heard it added several features not included in the blue one... maybe they were all available with the JJ OS. Anyway... I won't beat a dead horse... thanks for the input.

Nope...it's the same...and the version 2 OS update (not JJ) was free from Akai.

Hit the gym...do a couple sets of curls...and then keep the XL.

could you explain your opinion? I'm in the same situation as the guy who started this topic and also a previous XL owner. Since the new 500 is sold cheaper than most 1k's used (over here), I am again considering to get that 500. So..whats so bad about it, no wavefile editing oke.. and beside that?

If you are a previous MPC user and looking to get a newer MPC as your main unit...you should at least demo one.

go with the mpc 500. the mpc 1000 has the worst pads of any mpc and they will fail because there is a design flaw.

aren't the pads the same?

that screen alone makes me have mpc rage
