who is still using step edit and why?

As a new MPC user (but veteran drum machine programmer) I will back off a little bit on my statement. I have seen some weird things but only when I try to cut and paste in Step Edit. Most of my S.E. moves are dynamic and timing changes and event deletions and those work.

Same 4 me pretty much so i guess i should be good.

I use Step edit all the time

I use the grid edit to look at volume slides and things

eh, i hear this so much that i tend to feel like people just think it sounds cool...i don't see how you are using your ears any more with or without seeing stuff on grid, it's not like your ears turn off when your eyes open

I use the step edit for changing the pad numbers to get new beats that way. I wish I could find a way to keep the screen from scrolling while playing though.

that's a good technique.

oh, here's something. not to beat a horse but about the use your ears thing: grid edit displays the notes on the TC timing where they are closest. it does't show their swing or shift graphically. the display is "rounded off" to the closest grid marker

so you HAVE to use your ears to hear what is swung, what is shifted, etc

That's funny! well at the rate that my pads are failing i may have to find another way to make my beats ant! That's probably why the grid edit was implemented in the first place.

In order to use the grid (sensibly) tc must be on... Its not that I cant use it. its just a whole sh** load of wading I have to do in there with quantize off! all 96 notes

Im just better off in step edit where the note is right there and i can nudge it accordingly..

oh well...


I don't want to buy another mpc.... but these pads are driving me insane

Maybe a used 2000xl or a 2500... I should go with the 2500 since i can gut my harddrive and memory from the 1k and slap it in there with no problems...

try it esk - you'll get a hold on it quick...swing is one thing, but dynamic swing is a whole other story. makes the drums that much more expressive.

this is kinda off the topic, but personally I can focus on sound better when I'm not distracted visually, not that it really matters in relation to the grid... you can always close your eyes if you wanna just listen.

True, while mixing and arranging I always used to turn the monitor off during vital passages when I was sequencing on my computer. Made all the difference for keeping concentrated on the vitals, shutting your eyes is even better, but could be a little risky I think.
Analyzing your breaks, build ups and arrangements again and again in really deep concentration could make you build stuff and twist things that are "correct" as far as musical "rules" apply, but are slightly unorthodox or "off" forcing the listener (including you as you return to it the next day) to be as introvert as you during listening, otherwise it´ll sound queer.
One have to keep it balanced cause ones ears can also lead one astray.

i dont like to put the notes in the grid edit screen

I make drum loops that way but i always do the effects in record

sometimes it looks like cubase or something. you make all the things with your mouse.

And a mouse is not a musical instrument

I agree. I always record a beat in "Real Time," not through step edit or grid edit. IMHO, recording in "Real Time" to me is actually "playing" a musical instrument and "making" a beat. Now having said that, I do use grid edit or sometimes step edit for editing previously recorded notes in a beat. For example, I might use grid edit for fixing minor pitch, velocity, or timing issues on certain notes, and use step edit to insert control changes in certain parts of the sequence and such. I've also found out step edit can really come in handy and allow you to create new sequence only patches by turning knobs on your synth to enter control change events all in the first step at the beginning of the sequence.

if grid edit was able to be viewed with TC OFF without it zooming in to a resolution of 1/96, would you guys like it more? this would give you the user-power of TC off while still giving you the overview/wider view of grid edit.

i know i'd die for that.
