thinking about buying a mpc.

I have been using fruity loops for about 1 year and I'm tired of it. I have asked a few people online about what should i get, some say pro tools, but most tell me I should get a mpc. I know what a mpc is but I don't know how it works. Is it just a smapler, or can u run other programs on it, or what? I've never used one, not even seen one.
I just need someone how it works, and how you work it. I don't want to spend a few g's and not know anything about it.

I started in the FL world. I still have a lot of love for it and I still use it with my 4000.
The way I explain it to people is that the 4000 is FL with an MPC sequencer. The rock solid timing can not be duplicated on a PC.

Tracks that I have produced in FL just sound better in the 4000.
With less work.

Don't worry about the learning curve. It's harder to get good music out of Fl than the 4000. When I first got the machine I felt like I was cheating.
Compared to the time and effort I would spend in Fl trying to get my tracks to be as tight as possible.
If you can learn how to produce good tracks with FL you should be able to produce great tracks with a 4000. Plus it works great with FL to control my vst's (plugins/Soundfonts).

If you're coming from a FL/PC world the 4000 is for you.

i saved 2 years for this sucker, worth every penny and all the wait.

you can pretty much get the picture from the above, what i can say though from my perspecive.

it's like having the best notepad/backing band in the world. i'm a solo musician and have been banging stuff out in my head for a while, you can throw a sample down and loop it in no time. the machine is really like

A. Loop Software (filters,chop etc.)
B. Sequencer software (drum program, key spread, 128 tracks and controls up to 6 sources. 2 internal and 4 external)
C. Hardware sampler (24-bit mono/stereo sampling)

all in one.

you can't load ware or plug-in's to it, just update the OS via Aksys.

it doesn't generate tones of it's own, it relies on sample source material but from there it's a unique instrument.

pretty much, load up sounds and hammer them out on the pads or other MIDI device and save the sequence.

string sequnces together to make a song. all graphical and friendly. the manual leaves you wanting but these cats are nice.

i looked at the Yamaha AW16G and the Roland MV8000 as well as the MPC4000 and the 4k won out.

my reservation was without Linear recording, but the sampling time with the 512mb allows for more than enough time to even record vocals straight to it and loop them with the appropriate bars.

it's tight!
