whats the difference between a drum machine and getting electronic drums and hooking them up

you'd hook em both up in a MODULE way.

bsaically it's just a trigger.

Drum Machine has pads on it to trigger sounds, run MIDI IN/OUT to control or slave.

Electronic Drums (like a kit) are just a trigger source. you hit the pads, kick the pedal etc. all of these triggers go into a Drum Module. Alesis and Roland make some you can check out. you go from the Drum Module and run MIDI IN/OUT to control or slave.

the big differences are in what you are striking to produce a note.

other than that it's just a tactile preference, the hardware routes the same.

Have you tried Hollowsun.com? They have a ton of high quality samples of vintage drum machines. I think it's what you're looking for.
