pad assignments

Is there some logic to the way notes are assigned to pads? in this non-sequential manner?
I was just read ing the manual, and it seems the preset assignment suppose to be sequential, pad a1-36, a2-37, etc. However, that is not the case on my 2000xl nor in the mpc editor.. It seems you can create a blank program with the sequential assignment and save it as a template for ur future program building, but that just seems rather troublesome.. is there a way to make this assignment more permenent? Like burn it into the os?

The pad assignment is set up for GM drum mapping(remember this is a MIDI production center). As far as I know loading up a blank program with chromatic pad assignments is the only work around.

Yeah, create a blank program with the notes in sequential
order like you want it to be,

or

Download the blank template program (PGM) Tutor has on this site.

Either way it's the same end result.

I have a question for Cooo.. u said it is based on the gm drum mapping.. so why is it side stick on a1, kickdrum on a2 and closed-hihats on a3.. that just seems rather strange to me..

also, I did some digging.. a quick way to create a blank chromatic pad assignment for urself is the following step:
1. boot up the mpc.
2. goto programs.
3. select drum 1
4. press auto
5. choose both source and original note to be 36, which should be A2.
6. Press do it.
7. Save this program.
and waala.. a chromatic pad assignment program with Tune all setup for u

I always have issues with assigning samples to pads so they are in sequential order on my keyboard. When you load a sample, it won't let you hit a keyboard key to assign the sample to. It doesn't seem very logical with the way the MPC pads correspond with keyboard keys ;(

how would I set my pads up in order on my plain ol mpc 2000 (not xl)

well.. aoism.. if u use the chromatic pad assignment, then A1 will corresponding to the note B1 and A2 will correspond to note C2... etc. so it will be sequential. Also, this way the tuning is set for u.. so u no longer need to set tuning for each individual pad.

But won't I need a sample to do the chromo pad assignment? I won't want to chromo a sample .. just the way the pads correspond with the keyboard so whatever sample I have on them triggers I guess I could spend 5 minutes and find out for myself Thanks for the pointer.

It's not really based on GM. There is actually a reason for the layout. I think I have posted the reason a few times here and I think is also posted at mpc2000xl.com

when I auto chromatic tune my samples, I can just use my keyboard via midi to play the samples. All samples are played across the keys in correct location corasponding with those keys. This is also a pretty good way to layer your samples in with the keys. Usualy I turn the volume of my keyboard down, and sequence a Drum program for the samples, but if I want to have both the samples and the keyboard to play at the same time, just copy your drum program to a new track, switch that track to midi, turn up you volume on your keys, and there you go, both sounds layered at the same time.

I really dont know why my notes are comming out in perfect order. From what you guys are saying, you are having trouble with this.
Mabe its a midi thing. I dont know.
