How Do Most of You Guys Make Your Basslines?

I want to start adding basslines to my beats, but have been having some difficulty. So, I was wondering a) how most of you do your basslines and b) if you have any tips to share.

I either A) do it the oldschool way and find a song, some old shit with a cool bassline and pass it through a lo-filter, or B) find some cool bass sounds and program it myself.

if i don't use real bass i'll create a nice bass sound with an analog synth and sequence it.

you can do the same with vst's in your daw of choice if you dont own a hardware synth.

or d) get cool with a professional or trained bass player. nothing sounds better then a live bassline

i always get mine from vinyl. i turn up the low eq and turn down the high and mid eq on my dj mixer. i sample the bass i want, then i put a low pass filter on it. finally, add a little compression to make it bump.

I use synths for basslines...

sample a bass sound with your mpc, hit auto and play it on your midi keyboard.

I sometimes play my basslines using the pads, either by using 16 levels, or assigning a sample to them - or I control an external synth from the mpc.

Gives you a different perspective of those scales...

I do a bass multisample on the mpc or a synth bass (fantom xr, emu mophatt, triton, analog synth, vst, etc.)

You can do all the above mentioned, but unless you are a bass player, a bass sound on a synth is the easiest way to go.

But; I recomend you purchase mpc tutors bass multisample pack so before you go buy a synth. Why? because it cost like 15 bones. you can load it up in your mpc and see what a bass multisample is all about.
That way you can learn without spending alot of money on a synth, only to find out you where looking for something else.


Alot of people use bass samples and most of them come from a synth, vinyl, or real bass guitar.

I use soundforge to do them,
or sometimes i'll turn my televison up really loud and then put it on mute to get that hiss/humm sound and make a multisample from it.

I used to use my cello every now and then before I busted one of the strings by accident.

i play bass

and if im feeling lazy, i just filter the main sample until its all bass, and put that beneath the unfiltered sample.

and/or, i have some random sound loaded into the mp, auto chromatic, filtered until the bass punches, then sequence.

i often use weird lo-freq noise not really a baseline but enough to cover those frequencies.

All my basslines are either an electric bass, synth or both layered

Sometimes i use samples, but i can never get all the notes i want. Plus, i find it alot easier to locate notes on an instrument other than a sampler. and i get a more live human feel!
